Edward Marston is the pseudonym of Keith Miles, a fairly prolific and extremely good writer of mainly Elizabethan and medieval mysteries. He has also written mysteries under his own name with both sporting and golf backgrounds. However it is primarily the books that take place earlier in history that I am interested in. He read modern history at Oxford and has had many jobs, including university lecturer, but fortunately for all his readers, he turned to the writing profession.

Araminta Jewell more than lives up to her name. She is one of the most beautiful women in London, but she is more than just a beauty, she is charming and witty and many would say the ideal woman. Even though she is now married to the dreary and none ... Read More:

Susanna Gregory writes wonderful, well researched books. She manages to bring medieval Cambridge to life and paints a fascinating picture in her books. On top of that, the mysteries are great and well devised. Truly one of the most enjoyable series I have ever read.

Those of you studying A210 "Approaching Literature" would do well to buy this edition (based on the 1818 Frankenstein), rather than loose your time on the York Notes (1831 version). The contemporary critics, commentaries and essays make up for half the book already, and this is great primary source material for essay writing. Highly recommended.

I bought this book and All You Need to Know About the City (All You Need to Know Guides) by Christopher Stoakes, and I would say the latter is better for beginners and the former moves the pace up a gear or two.

The City:A Guide to London's Global Financial Centre (Economist)covers all the key historical financial events, analyses them, and explains why the happened clearly and concise. It's well worth reading, but I would advise people to read All You Need to Know About the City (All You Need to Know Guides)first. Hope this helps.

I bought Alan Bennett's books on tape for my mother. She used to listen to them in bed at night, lying in the dark as Bennett's gentle, querulous voice described the minutiae of his family life in all its banal detail, illuminated by his wonderful observation and humour. Any one of his sentences will raise a smile. A whole book's-worth leaves you glowing with a feeling that all of our lives are equally full of this richness. How could they not be, when Bennett has found so much in what appears to be such a constrained and circumscribed world? He is indeed a national institution and we are fortunate that his voice on tape is perfectly equal to the poignancy and intimacy of his writing.

Cranford wasn't originally a novel but a series of occasional articles appearing in 'Household Words'. Due to this the book as a whole does not really hold up to being a complete novel, however it does make a good read. The village of Cranford is run more or less by women, with only a few male characters making an appearance. Gaskell seems to be sticking two fingers up at those men who thought that women weren't really able to take control of their own lives. The women seem to get on alright at what they do.

Although there are deaths in the community this book is very up-beat and not depressing. Indeed amongst the pages there is quite a lot of comedy, with a cow in flannels, a cat given an emetic so it will excrete some lace it's ingested, ... Read More:

If you like walking and hiking and enjoy the English Lake District, then you can't go much wrong with this book.

'The Man Who Loved the Lakes' has been written by Martin wainwright (no relation) as a tie- in to the BBC series Wainwright Walks. But this is not simply a book to accompany a TV series. Martin (no relation to AW) is a keen hill walker himself and also is a great admirer of the lakes.

This is a wonderfully written and affectionate tribute to Wainwright and his work. The book is in three sections. First comes an extended essay on the life of AW. This is followed by a second essay on the Lakes, fells and summits themselves, reflecting on how AW experienced and remembered them. And finally, there are a selection of walks included ...
