As a working journalist, this is the only book I (and every colleague I've ever worked with on any newsdesk) reach for time and time again. Not only is it bang up to date, it explains all aspects of reporting law clearly and succinctly.
Unsure of what libel is? How to defend against it? Are you in contempt of court? Breaching the Official Secrets Act? Taking photographs of children? Invading somebody's privacy? McNae's knows. And it's written in a way to tell you quickly.
It's known as The Bible in the regional newsrooms I've worked in all my life - and it's easy to see why when you read it. I can't recommend this highly enough: EVERY reporter should have their own copy.

This is an astonishingly good revision of the classic guide, which I have used for many years. If you're going to use it 'in anger' it's to be preferred to the original edition.

In a sense, Chris Jesty does himself an injustice, because his new material is spliced in so incredibly well with Wainwright's, both in style and in lettering, that it's often only when you look at the original that you realise that it actually is new material.

Also, the quality of the reproduction is excellent - better, as far as I can see, than that of the later printings of the first edition

The same comments apply to the revised 'Central Fells', and, on the strength of these excellent volumes, I have ordered the other two.

This book just goes to show that you don't need to be a star or an
international to write a good story about life as a professional
footballer. Perry Groves certainly isn't the most most famous player ever,
he played for Colchester and then he was a fringe player in the Arsenal side
under George Graham, but his memoirs aren't limited at all by the fact he
never became a household name.
He always seemed to see the funny side of everything - even defeats or
injuries - and obviously enjoyed his football. Above everything else he
liked a laugh and it comes across throughout the book. Although he was
never a regular in the Arsenal team and his career was cut short by injury,
there is ... Read More:

As they would probably say in Yorkshire, "what the bloody hell was all that about?" Having now read two of this author's books, I feel I have sussed his technique which is to use the vagueness of abstraction to disguise lack of plot and inconsistency of storyline.

Strip away the "clever" switching of character telling the first person narrative and the italicised prose and the dream sequences and you have left something that doesn't quite add up. Back to the Yorkshie vernacular and I would say that Mr Peace is "too clever for his own good".

What could be a very gripping, sexy, noir and grity novel is spoilt for me by some unnecessarily complicated literal trickery. I enjioyed 1974 but by the time I was half way through 1977 I got very tired ... Read More:

There is nothing compelling or amazing about this book not because of the author or his style but for the content. I struggle to find the benefit of reading about these horrific events. Don't get me wrong I am not sensitive; I enjoy watching and reading horror but I got half way through this and I've decided to burn the book. If you enjoy reading this book then there is something wrong with you. It's not fiction, these two characters deserve to rot in hell

I am always a little reluctant to buy books that claim to be a "new history" of events that were well recorded and happened some 370 years ago. English history lacks bite, a dull procession of uninspired monarchs and a frenzy of Empire building. The Civil War seemed more a squabble, relatively small armies and minor engagements. Brought up in the West Country, the ruins of Corfe Castle and siege at Sherborne vaguely linked me to Cromwell, the man with warts, with no more than a hazy school history to call on.

I dipped into Michael Braddick's large book and - as they say - found it hard to put down. The issues, sketched from numerous angles were well developed. The politics of the three Kingdoms (although this is not focussed on Ireland and Scotland), ... Read More:

This is history at its best - it's readable, compelling and thoroughly enjoyable. Tinniswood's book achieves many goals in one - a fascinating social history, meticulous biography, powerful family saga, and not least it is a really good and engaging read.

The tale begins with Sir Francis Verney who ran away from his teenage wife in 1608, sold off much of the Verney property, converted to Islam and became one of the most feared pirates on the Barbary Coast. Carry on to read about Bess, who ran off with a clergyman; Cary, a heavy gambler, and Henry who was obsessed with horse racing; not to mention those involved in the English Civil War; Mall, who became pregnant out of marriage, or one of the later relatives who was hanged at Tyburn.
