Silks did not disapoint, well up to the standard of thriller we have come to expect from firstly Dick and now with his son Felix, lets hope there is another in the pipeline.

I was hooked by this novel from the prologue, which takes place in London in 1962, when visiting 30-something American lawyer Joel meets 18-year-old typist Audrey and takes her home to New York as his wife. Forty years on, as the novel proper starts, the couple are still living in New York, still the most unpleasant kind of left-wing, self-regarding agit-propagandists, when Joel is struck down by a stroke. Audrey has become a monster and her children are miserable, each in their own way. Rosa is flirting with orthodox Judaism, Karla, the plain, fat one with no self esteem, is stuck in an appalling marriage and adopted son Lenny is a drug addict. I bought this book along with the gruffalo's child for my 3 year old daughter. What a fantastic buy, she loved it, the animation and story telling is brilliant, not only for her but for me as the reader. I will be buying the other books in this collection shortly.

Anathem was a complete surprise to me. I had deliberately avoided reading anything about the book before I bought it, willing to trust the author to come up with another excellent novel comparable to Snow Crash, The Diamond Age or Cryptonomicon. After reading the first 50 or 60 pages, I was wondering if I'd wasted my money. I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. The many invented words peppered throughout the text didn't help either - you can immediately decipher many of them from context they're used in, but it is annoying to do it as often as Anathem requires. this is a great, well organised textbook... a very good aid to learning. the only problem is, there's a factual mistake on every other page! all anatomy textbooks have mistakes, due to rushing the books through editing, but gray's is especially bad! make sure you buy another book if you want to gain a more accurate knowledge and read about topics from a number of different authors

This book is split into chapters based on the traditional school subjects, such as geography, history, maths, and then within each chapter split into 'typical things we were taught', ranging from the list of British kings to trigonometry to Charles Dickens. There are certain chapters you'll skip, either because they were your specialist subject at university or because you're still not interested years later. But there are chapters you'll definitely be saying "I used to know that!" for. It doesn't take very long to read the entire book, but that's only half the usefulness, because my copy will be taking a prominent place on my shelf- because next time anything that relates to these subjects comes up, I'll remember (I hope) that if I've forgotten it, this is ... This book grabbed me from the word go. The easy and quick pace throws you straight into the story and takes you on a roller coaster ride to the end. Nearly every chapter leaves you wanting to know what happens next. A good thriller from start to finish.

This book has been written in the sense of a dialogue between master and disciple reminicent of the Corpus Hermeticum. However in this case the reader may or may not find these imposed questions useful or, indeed annoying... This is a book which is either going to hit a chord, or will seem like utter nonsense. From my point of view as an average reader, I have found it very important because it explores concepts of this mind/ego (a double) which is inside of each person which needs confronting in someway. I think this book is must read for anyone who feels they are on a spiritual path, because fundementally (and in my limited understanding) the awareness of the 'double' and the fission of dark and light is inevitable along this path.
