I was really looking forward to this book being a lover of Crime/Thirllers and Tudor history. I thought this would be right up my street and it seemed to be getting lots of good reviews on Amazon. Story surrounds Shardlake - lawyer and officer of Thomas Cromwell - who is sent to a monastery to investigate a murder. The book looked great and I began it with great excitement but I have to say I found it slow, dull, predictable and very put downable. Has some similarities to Name of the Rose in atmosphere (but obviously not as good) but I won't be reading any more of his.

My first foray into Marian Keyes and I really enjoyed it. 4 quite different women and their connection to one 'charming' man and how their lives have been influenced - sometimes quite disasterously - by the connection. Not what I was expecting from chick lit ie quite hard hitting in places, plot not comletely predicatable, created a lot of empathy for the characters. I agree with others that the voice of Lola got on my nerves a bit - not really sure what she was trying to achieve here but this didn't really detract from the enjoyment as the story was gripping enough to keep me reading for longs stretches and so I got into the swing of 'Lola speak'. Would recommend for a beach read.

Having ploughed through the endless he said she saids of this laborious task in search of one interesting page i was grief stricken to find that this book was not only predictable, irritating and badly written but i actually stopped reading it on the second last page because i wouldn't give the author the pleasure of five more minutes of my time. I felt she already owes me, not only the time i wasted reading it, but i'd also like my money back if that is at all possible

How this woman got away with such drivel and had it published amazes me.

p.s. You can have those memories back!

this is Dorothy Koomson in 'weepy' mode, which i think is what she does best. I hated Cupid Effect and the Chocolate Run, both pointless, insipid and boring. There are some great characters in this book and it reads like a good Jodi Picoult. She does ramble on a bit at times and i did find myself skipping whole pages of description, but the plot is good, unpredictable and very sad.

108.The Selfish Gene by: Richard Dawkins

Dawkins writes that "the argument of this book is that we, and all other animals, are machines created by our genes" (p.xxi) and that "We are survival machines - robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes" (p.xxi). Yet, according to him, this book "is not science fiction; it is science" (p.xxi)!

Dawkins contrives to overlook the twin discoveries that:
1. the observable traits of organisms are mostly conditioned by the interactions of many genes;
2. most genes have multiple effects on many of these traits.

Dawkins transfers characteristics with which he is familiar from human behaviour on the macro-level to the inanimate components, "genes", of which we are physically constructed. ... Read More:

This book is bloody ace. I went mad and bought 4 pregnancy books but this one is by far the clearest, most sensible, most reassuring, best laid out, most informative and least patronising of the lot. This is my first pregnancy and I live abroad so need as much info as possible about what's happening to me and my baby and this is just brilliant - totally indispensable. If you're going to buy a pregnancy book - just buy this one, you won't need any others.

Unfortunately i had a fever during my first trimester and without this book i would never have known whether calling the doctor was the right or wrong thing to do (it;s the right thing to do) - I can't praise this book enough.

I first read this book way back in the late 70's. More luck then judgement I used to play a game where I would go to my local library in South Ockendon and just go over to the fiction section and take any book off the shelve and read it. Worked quite well as I would never have selected this title and at that time, when I was in my early 20's I had never heard of it.

I read the book over the week initially determined to finish it, but after a few chapters keen to see where the book would lead. I loved it and felt compelled to read other J.D. Salinger titles. I don't think I found any however.

The book is now infamous due to Mark Chapman's association with it. I suppose any publicity to get people to read a classic however is good news and I know ... Read More:
