Englishmum.com's July book was The Resurrectionist by James Bradley. Admittedly I got this late and had to force myself to read it over one weekend but `force' is definitely the right word. I found that the old fashioned language, although no doubt authentic, quite awkward:

`It is three months since I came here, apprenticed to my master's side so I might learn his trade.'

I really, really enjoyed the descriptions of London in the early 1800s - he went into great detail about how they lived, what they ate, the people, the places - this was by far the most enjoyable part of the book for me. However I didn't really think there was much of a plot: orphaned chap comes to London, works for anatomist, gets in a fight (why ... Read More:

I really wanted this book to be fabulous and a fitting HEA for Ash. The first part of the book, Ash's back story I found myself reading until midnight as I found it so engrossing although not always enjoyable due to the strong content. Admittedly towards the end of the first part, i wondered what else SK could think up to do to Ash but a riveting read non the less.
I would have liked to have seen some glimpses of what Ash did for thousands of years between his reaching godhood and the current day.
The second and much shorter part of the book, meeting his heroine and falling in love, I did not find nearly so interesting. Personally I did not find the chemistry between them so strong as in earlier books such as Vane and Bride. I felt SK ... Read More:

I was really looking forward to Richard and Judys summer reads but this book really dissapointed me. It missed a good storyline and often I thought it included to much uneccessary detail. I found it quite boring and often thought of just giving up on it. Would not reccomend.

In this lovely, useful book, Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein examine choices, biases and the limits of human reasoning from a variety of perspectives. They often amuse by disclosing how they have fallen victim to the limitations of thought that they are describing. The fact that these educated, articulate professionals can fool themselves so often demonstrates how tough it is to think clearly, a point the authors emphasize and even repeat. Humans fall prey to systematic errors of judgment, but you can harness this problematic tendency productively, including by helping others make better decisions. Some of the authors' suggestions may not be practical, but many are and all are interesting. getAbstract recommends this book to anyone who wants to know how to shape ... Read More:

I have read all of Mr Robinson's books, in the Banks series,
and feel l can make a justified review of his latest work.
Having to say at the start, that l still think 1 day Cabbot
will go back with Banks into a relationship.
It's the strangest start to a book l have read, the murders
are solved so quick. But the reasons for why are the story
base line. My ignorance shows through when he starts
talking about Othello!!
If you were to ask me is it a good bank's story l would
say yes without doubt, like in any Bank's story there
always twists and turns.
I'm convinced that if Banks went into a desert, he would
find water, because in his questioning there isn't anything
he doesn't ask, and he always ... Read More:

Not a great book.

Note the apostophe in the title - this is Gordon Ramsey branded, but he only wrote the intro. The recepies are by his trusty side-kick Sarge.

The recepies themselves are all pretty simple, basic stuff - not what you would hope (or expect) from Gordon Ramsey.

Save your money and spend it elsewhere!

On the whole, the author has done a very good job of bringing together the plotlines from the previous books in the series. The ending is a little contrived, but that was to be expected. There are plenty of contrived sections and sub-plots in the previous books from the series - this is, after all, a fantasy for older children (adult readers often forget that), and it requires some leaps of faith to allow it to move on. It's not supposed to have a solid logical foundation.

I can't understand the moans about the middle "camping" section, nor suggestions that the book is too dark or gruesome, certainly not for today's average teenager. The whole book engrossed me all the way through. A great page-turner. Rowling is an excellent writer and her plots work very well.

This book was recommended to me as a thought provoking and truly good read. It made me really think about God and how he loves us. It doesn't matter that it may not be theologically correct, it is a story and doesn't claim to take the place of the bible but, what it does do, is to really make you take a good look at how you conduct yourself and behave towards others. As a Christian, it really made me realise that some of the feelings and experiences we have can do so much damage to us, but with God's love our lives and behaviour can change. If we all took more time to love and be more forgiving the world and our lives would be so much better. It was a gripping story and I would definitely recommend it, in fact I have recommended it and so far all my friends who have read it have ... Read More:
