While I have used this on rare car journeys into the capital, I value it mainly as a reference work and it sits on my bookshelf. I am very lucky as it includes Sevenoaks, where I live, as well - perhaps more to do with a kink in the M25 than the city boundary.

With its excellent mapping at 3.3 inches to the mile - 9 inches to the mile for the centre - as well as planning maps of various sizes, it really is difficult to think of what else AZ could add. Perhaps some more plans like the theatres and cinema ones showing visitor attractions, and perhaps one map of the whole M25 area, unencumbered by the grid of the detail pages, for planning purposes.

I have had my current edition for 10 years and its still in great condition. ... Read More:

I wonder where LP will set its own limit on the destinations they cover. Being excellent and nr.1 in guidebooks of unexplored, less known or not well organized places, they also have written books about places like Malta (and The Canary Islands) where one can go easy on your own without a guidebook like this one.
About Malta there are numerous guidebooks with detailled descriptions of the places, and that is what people ever need to visit Malta. Most people will be there in some sort of package tour already anyway. Once there the locals speak english and the island is so well organized you do not need a LP to find out what to do, how to get around etc. The tourist office is also extremely well providing brochures, maps of everything you need before ... Took my fiance to Paris recently and bought this book for the trip.
Have always been impressed when I've taken one of the Lonely Planet guides on my travels, and this book maintained the high standards that I've come to expect from them.
Doesn't matter if you know a bit about where you are visiting or if you are completely clueless - everything you could need to know is in here.
Well written, easy to use, full of useful information, and yet small enough to fit in a coat pocket.
Highly recommend.

This is a fantastic book even if you are not a fan of cricket! In fact if you don't understand cricket you'll find this book even funnier. Inspired by a Canadian Psychic and accompanied by a family ghost, Angus the intrepid Caledonian Cricketer sets out in his Skoda to conquer Eastern Europe armed with only an MCC coaching manual and some stumps! You'll find this a very easy to read book with plenty of images included some nice glossy colour ones (just in case your imagination can't conjure up a 5'9" Scotsman lofting a tennis ball from Europe into Asia across the river Bosphorus!).

I usually travel with LP so maybe I am a little biased but I did find this book up to their normally high standards.

The legendary confusion of Venice's allyways meant I was wary of this book's maps (esp considering LP's less than perfect record in that regard). However I was pleasantly surprised and in 4 days in the city did not get lost using them. It was a little annoying the way they were split across several pages but i guess that was necessary to acheive the accuracy.

The tips to the sights and the walking tours were exellent. The restaurant and shopping sections were ok. I cant comment on the hotels section as I was in an apartment.

The prices (on everything) and some of the transport details were out-of-date.

I ended up with three maps of Madeira. A local free one, one from the Sunshine walking/touring guide and this one. I attempted to use this map to navigate around Funchal but the motorway junctions are not numbered and not all of them appear on the map. Navigating to Monte was a challenge since junctions 11 & 12 are missing. I would not recommend this map for driving although it may be ok for buses. One plus point though, it was the only map to indicate the old road to Curral das Freiras is closed.

There are other books on walking Hadrian's Wall, but for me this is easily the best in just about every area. Whilst I'll always be open to new publications, in 2008 this is the only guide you will need to walk the wall safely, and that will give you you accurate and precise historical information on the way.

It ticks all the boxes. From a practical view it is compact and won't fall apart at the sight of the first shower - of which you may encounter several. You can use it to walk the wall in sections or in one hit. It describes the route very accurately, and allows enough space for a good depth of historical information. Hard to beat.

The maps are so clear, and the book is packed with nuggets of information about the history and routes of the canals it covers. Whether you cruise, walk, cycle or just sit in an armchair and dream, this book is worth having. I found a problem with the previous edition while cruising the Welford Arm, and the publishers were so helpful, and fixed it in this edition. I love it.

A huge amount of effort and research has gone into this chunky guide. Just choosing the pictures must have been a mammoth task: they're all up to date, in colour and give a clear idea of the delights of the various cities and attractions.

I used to work in a visitor information office in Wales and found the section on South Wales particularly well done, especially since it's an area off the typical tourist track. The only thing which let it down was the hotel recommendations. They tend to be in areas often way outside of town and city centres, so aren't much use to those travelling without cars.

It may be a little heavy to carry round with you, but it's ideal as a reference source if you're at home researching a trip and want to sort out an itinary. ... Read More:

Time Out guides are the best single guides for city breaks and the Istanbul guide is a case in point. Accomodation and entertainment listings are critical and comprehensive and the information for tourists informative and helpful. However the maps at the back could be more useful. For a visual guide to the city look at DK. Anyone from a week-end tourist to a long term expat would find this invalubale.
