This is a large book- over 1000 pages, and it aims to be a single, comprehensive guide to Britain. It begins with a section on travel advice such as tips about safety, information about currency and safety and information about travelling to Britain and within Britain. Basically, information for before you travel. But I would question the appeal of this kind of printed material. All this information can be found out quite easily online, and online sources are naturally much more up to date.

In the intro, and throughout the book, they make remarkable generalisations. "English pubs general..." " The British public usually..." I hope people don't take this too seriously!

Also this book is not re-written, it is simply ... Read More:

I foind this Rough Guide and very informative just like the previous guide books I have used in the past. It has the top 20 places to visit and it is clearly laid out.
The information about the places I visited was very informative
and helpful. I attempted to speak in Spanish and I found the phrases and words useful when trying to order food or ask directions.
I enjoyed reading the history of the area, Catalan and I would recommend the book to friends.
Although the book was published 2 years ago some of the information was not correct but that should not be a problem.

If, like me, you love water and find yourself in an area wondering what there might be to do to fill in a an evening's walk, this gazetteer is invaluable. Time and again it identifies the local gems, from sea caves to tea shops, ruined churches to secret bays.

If you want to plan a trip then the most spectacular places are highlighted with full page picture spreads. I love it.

Great photos, production, layout and maps (loads of them) too.

I wonder where LP will set its own limit on the destinations they cover. Being excellent and nr.1 in guidebooks of unexplored, less known or not well organized places, they also have written books about places like Malta (and The Canary Islands) where one can go easy on your own without a guidebook like this one.
About Malta there are numerous guidebooks with detailled descriptions of the places, and that is what people ever need to visit Malta. Most people will be there in some sort of package tour already anyway. Once there the locals speak english and the island is so well organized you do not need a LP to find out what to do, how to get around etc. The tourist office is also extremely well providing brochures, maps of everything you need ... We have just returned from short trip to Disney Paris. This book was quite useful, but best read with a degree of caution. The authors seem to be lacking any real objectivity and are so gushy about the resort some parts of the book are nauseating to read. Whilst I would agree Disneyland is a great experience for children and a lot of fun for all, the authors don't point out the poor points clearly enough. e.g. the hotel accommodation (we stayed at the Vienna Dream Castle) is below par for the star ratings given, I imagine because they have a captive audience and can get away with murder. Also the food outlets are all extortionate.

There are other books on walking Hadrian's Wall, but for me this is easily the best in just about every area. Whilst I'll always be open to new publications, in 2008 this is the only guide you will need to walk the wall safely, and that will give you you accurate and precise historical information on the way.

It ticks all the boxes. From a practical view it is compact and won't fall apart at the sight of the first shower - of which you may encounter several. You can use it to walk the wall in sections or in one hit. It describes the route very accurately, and allows enough space for a good depth of historical information. Hard to beat.
