As an introduction to Turkey, I feel that this is the best all-round guide available. Not too heavy, visually inspiring and with honest and sensible text. Independant travellers may find Lonely Planet more useful as it is more comprehensive. This guide contains accurate and useful info on all the essential sites to be seen in Turkey.

This is an excellent book, but although there's some original stuff, it's really more a synthesis of the works of others than anything else. While Robb pulls it all together extremely well, he fails to attribute his sources adequately, using italics in an awkward and, for a reader, distracting fashion where he quotes other writers. He also neglects to relate specific quotes to their sources, which may have been an editorial decision intended not to put off the more casual readers. Nevertheless, this makes for a frustrating read at times. I kept seeing the work of Norman Lewis, in his riveting and beautifully written book The Honoured Society, quoted here without any direct attribution, and returned to that book often as I was reading Robb's. ... I highly recommend this book.

It is full of colourful diagrams, maps, pictures, routes and valuable tips that made my holiday planning to England most enjoyable and easy.

It is well organised into regions and the introduction information on the history, culture and architecture of England are great.

You will enjoy reading this book even if not visiting England.

As a Scot, living in Scotland, this is the one guide book that I refer to again and again. When holidaying in Scotland, we plan whole days around this book. We'll plan a scenic route to see a waterfall or a good walk with the dog. We'll work out what eaterie we're going to have lunch in, and invariably, we'll be staying in a hotel, B&B or guest house recommended by this guide and have a pint in one of its suggested pubs.

The thing I like most about this guide is that it's not neccessarily "Scotland The Most Expensive". It has everything from "Best Fish and Chip Shops" through to top michelin starred restaurants. All this via "Best Waterfalls", "Best Woodland Walks", "Best Scenic Drives" etc. etc.

Once you get into the way this ... Read More:

Time Out guides are the best single guides for city breaks and the Istanbul guide is a case in point. Accomodation and entertainment listings are critical and comprehensive and the information for tourists informative and helpful. However the maps at the back could be more useful. For a visual guide to the city look at DK. Anyone from a week-end tourist to a long term expat would find this invalubale.

Having just spent 3 weeks in Romania, Macedonia & Albania - this guide was a true travel companion.

Having used the 2005 version of this guide to travel around Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Croatia in March 2006 - this one was much more useful and the writers had gone to great pains to make everything accurate (unlike their Western Balkans guide which was awash with misinformation and inaccuracies, normally regarding telephone numbers etc)

Having also brought the Bradt Albania guide with us (thank god we never relied on this as their pricing information for accommodation was grossly out of date & there was a real laziness in updating vital information) the Lonely Planet was the one that got grubbiest from continual ... Read More:

169.The Thames Path (National Trail Guides) (National Trail Guides) by: David Sharp

This is an indispensable companion if walking the Thames Path, and if you are taking only one book along with you, it should be this one. Others, such as Turner's one on pubs, the National Trail Companion, and the Imray map, are helpful, but you can get along without them if you have this.

Detailed OS maps are included for every step of the way, with the relevant text on the same page. The text itself gives very clear directions, fills you in on local history and landmarks, and points out pubs and other places of refreshment. The balance is just right.

Once the Path reaches London it follows both banks of the river. Here the text usefully splits into colour-coded north and south sections, which run in parallel to each other.

These maps are really useful when walking. I took this map on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition in the Peak District and it didn't stop raining. The other two maps we took fell apart, even in "waterproof" cases, but this map was brilliant and shows no signs of wear and tear.
