This was an absolutely invaluable book for our last holiday in Kefalonia. I have to be honest I was more interested in the eating than the walking because when we last went to Kefalonia the food was pretty average and I wanted to find some good restaurants. We went to a lot of the featured restaurants and they were all fantastic, especially Arkondiko in Argostoli and Sunset Taverna (when we found it) in Poros. We even ended up doing some of the walks, especially the ones that went to historical sites. The walk to Assos castle was wonderful, I was so glad we followed the book advice and didn't toil miles up the zig zagging main path, especially as there is not much to see when you get there!
It is packed with lots of fascinating information ... Read More:

As a general introduction to any of the many cities covered by this series, the DK Eyewitness books are invaluable. I own several. However, in common with others in the collection, the accuracy of hotel, and notably restaurant, recommendations in Rome is poor. On several visits to Rome and using the most up-to-date version of the guide at the time, restaurants had closed and in one case, the building no longer existed at the stated address! For food and accommodation try something else.

One final gripe. The series provides information on principle sites. Excellent information. It seldom, however, provides adequate information on how to find the site in the first place.

There was not much new in this edition and I wished I had stuck with the previous version. It's misleading to call it 'new' when so much of the content is 'old'. It represented poor value in my opinion. Also, some of the walk descriptions are vague and not that easy to follow with great chunks of the routes not described at all.

The book is very helpful and full of useful travel titbits when travelling round Sicily, pointing out interesting features of each of the main regions and recommended places to visit. The walking tour in Palermo was excellent, and the beaches highlighted were exceptional. The restaurant recommendations were fantastic, though the great hotel we stayed in was not mentioned in the guide, despite there only being a few hotels in the town itself.

You will need, however, to supplement the book with a language guide if you do not speak Italian, as it contains only the most basic phrases, and it would be helpful to expand on these when required. Furthermore, a more detailed map or sat-nav should be used to travel around, rather than relying on the small ... Read More:

This is a great guide whether you are island-hopping or simply someone who likes to go to Greece for your holidays. Also the format is very user-friendly and easier to navigate around than its main rival - The Rough Guide. The only Greek Islands guide book you'll ever need.

The first issue here is over the name of the book, It is NOT `Bitter Lemons of Cyprus'; it was published as `Bitter Lemons', and that title has far more contextual meaning. Lemons are bitter sweet, and that defines Durrell's relationship with Cyprus, his village, the villagers and indeed the UK, which he generally referred to as Pudding Island. I will declare an interest: I adore Cyprus; this book was a main reason for me to visit, and subsequently, some 20 years ago we bought an arty house in a beautiful village. We have spent eight years living amongst some of the most generous, open and warm-hearted people on earth. This rings out from Durrell's book too. His descriptions are precise, accurate, affectionate and objective. In parallel with his attempts ... Read More:

I decided to read "Venice" in preparation for a week-long stay in the Italian city.

Broken into three sections -- The People, The City, The Lagoon -- "Venice" is not a chronological history of the city but a meandering look at its past, present and future. Nor is it a guidebook, although it does contain a mine of information about what to see and where to go.

I think "The Times" probably described it best when they said it was "a classic love letter to Italy's most iconic city", because it is, indeed, a beautiful missive dripping with exquisite descriptions. I found it an enormously engaging and evocative read by an accomplished writer who really knows how to string a simile or two together. For example: "Venice is a cheek-by-jowl, back-of-the ...
