Clive Cussler is on the front cover and really no more else needs to be said. It's entertaining if not slightly ridiculous. This deviation from reality can be forgiven as it adds immesurably to the story and achieves that goal of tearing us from the daily routine and enriching our lives with a tale that rips along at 80 Knotts.
Entertainment aside, however, this NUMA files (Kurt Austin) adventure Didn't match the excitement of the Juan Cabrillo story Skeleton Coast.
A fan of Clive Cussler won't be dissapointed if they read without the preconception that Dirk Pitt is the alpha and the omega of Cussler's empire of literature.
Anyone contemplating a new book, and not having read a Cussler novel before, this isn't a bad place ... Read More:

The EU is a very complex organisation and Pinder provides a clear, structured description, starting with the historical background of the EU's predecessor organisations, moving through its structure and institutions through to key issues such as budget and CAP, and social policy.

His explanation of the difference between a federal approach and inter-governmentalism is particularly interesting to Brits, and he makes the UK's position and actions (and those of others) clear in context.

The principles underlying the EU's creation, development and functioning are clearly explained.

My major criticism, though, is that so much has happened to the EU since the book's publication - the launch of the Euro and ... Read More:

All in all, an enjoyable book. It is always interesting to view something from someone else's perspective; in this case, how the Brits view their father's mundane "daily drivers". Interesting to note how Ford products are viewed as somewhat boring, yet popular because products such as the Cortina and the Gran-Dad, er sorry, Granada, were reliable, durable, and stylish in that they copied their larger American cousins.
I found the Austin 1100 article to be of interest; that car was sold in Canada as the Austin America; in retrospect, it was far ahead of it's time; the current Nissan Versa seems to be an update of the Austin !!
It you buy this book, check out the Hillman Hunter photograph; the car is interesting but you'll see what I am referring to ... Read More:

I completed the various Michel Thomas Spanish courses and it is only natural to compare the vocabulary courses of his various "disciples" (in this case Dr Rose Lee Hayden) with those.

As a preliminary point, this is both difficult and uinfair because the courses teach fundamentally different things: MT taught grammar and very little vocabulary. Indeed, he taught vocabulary only to the extent that it was necessary to teach the structure of the language. This course aims to teach, frankly, as many different words as possible in 6 hours, with the result that grammar practice is cursory and it is necessary to do the course at least three times if you wish to internalise every word. I suspect many of the criticisms other have made spring from a failure ... Read More:

I found this book reminiscent of Secret Smile by the style of writing and the suspense (try that one you will like it). More of a psychological tale than a crime novel but I think that adds to the book and makes it more of a page turner. This writing couple keep you just in the 'room' with the characters with a small amount of knowledge being drip fed about every member of this chaotic household!

The first part of the novel is told by Astrid who, it would seem, is the catalyst for people she has had the minimum contact with being murdered.
The Second, called er..... part two, is from another angle and cleverely weaves the same tale - but from the eyes and thoughts of the murderer.

The only part that dissapointed me (there is always a downside ... Read More:

This is not the genre of books that I usually read but I was hooked from the first page.

The quality of Phillip Pullman's writing meant that I was instantly transported to firstly Victorian London, then Razkavia, a country that I almost feel patriotic about.

I now look forward to reading the preceeding three Sally Lockhart books.

Seymour writes serious and highly compelling thrillers which illuminate important parts of modern life that are often ignored or hidden. Here he deals with the terrifying potential interactions among organised crime, fundamentalism Islamic terrorism, and disaffected ex-Soviet military officers with access to nuclear weapons.

It has the usual Seymour hallmarks. He constructs several different threads which are woven into a powerful climax; here the use of retrospective narratives are unusual for him, but they fit well. Several different perspectives are provided, and though Seymour shies away from direct comment on moral issues there is, as is normal in his books, a strong sense of right and wrong. The writing is vivid and powerful, with several scenes and characters ... Read More:
