Tedious, ramshackle and utterly utterly self indulgent. I bought this book when I heard she had won the Nobel Prize, and actually read over half of it.
But, Oh what torture! All about herself, which is not good as she comes across as batty, but most of all as hugely boring.
first part set in Rhodesia, but might as well be Victoria Coach Station.
I live in central London, so please come and take my copy away, before I fling it out of my high rise!!

I bought this book by chance and what a delight it turned out to be. While, at times, disturbing, the book was a gread read and I'd strongly recommend it. I've now gone out and bought other books by the same author to see if they compare. I felt for all the characters, found the story to be sad and intriguing, while at the same time I enjoyed the whole approach. Read this book!

This is a classic story for children, set in the 50's, it is about time, memory and friendship.
Tom, lonely and isolated as he is in quarantine, finds his way back in time, at night (when the hall clock strikes 13), to a wonderful old garden and a little girl called Hattie, who, to his curiosity, is dressed in old fashioned clothes. The two lonely children become friends and I don't want to give away the beautifully devoloped plot, but Tom slowly realises that Hattie is growing up, while he remains the same age.
The atmosphere of the story is both mysterious and engaging, as Tom slowly works out where he is and who Hattie really is.
The end of the story takes in the biblical idea of time coming to and end, or the modern notion of not existing ... Read More:

This is the first Picoult that I have enjoyed from start to finish in a while. I do get slightly annoyed when she introduces so many characters at once, but once into the story it was a really good read. Thoroghly recommended!

The last sea-faring trilogy I read was William Golding's To The Ends Of The Earth (made up of Rites of Passage, Close Quarters and Fire Down Below). Ok, it's the only sea-faring trilogy I've read but I really enjoyed it. Sacred Hunger, which shared the Booker Prize in 1992 with Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient (what a year!), is another fantastic maritime narrative so I had high hopes for the first instalment of Amitav Ghosh's projected trilogy; would I be left in the doldrums or with wind in my sails?

The setting is an interesting one: the Indian subcontinent in the 1830's finds the British East India Company exerting their influence through the trade in opium. Ghosh shows us the effects of this trade immediately through Deeti whose husband, as well ... Read More:

I first read this (actually that should say I was first forced to read this) in school over 20 years ago. I hated it. It was disected to within an inch of its life and I came to dread those lessons with a passion. What a shame that school can manage to put off even the most ardent of readers. Isn't reading supposed to be about enjoyment?

I picked this up a couple of weeks ago out of curiosity and read the first page while standing in the bookshop. Before I knew it I had read the entire first chapter and loved it. There is such humour in Dicken's books that would have been totally wasted on me as a 15 year old.

It took me a few weeks to read (hence the 4 stars as I had to concentrate more than with other books) but I thought it was just wonderful. ... Read More:

I knew nothing about the Mitfords before borrowing this book from my mum. I found it highly compelling, especially all the references to the many influential and varied people of the 20th century. It is also very sad at times, especially the harsh realities of the passage of time. This collection of letters has been carefully chosen to tell the reader the Mitfords' story but in the words of the girls themselves.

I finished Random Acts last weekend and it's one of those rare books that stays with you long after you've finished it. I still find it creeping into my thoughts. At first I was reading Leo's story as the predominant one but as Moritz's one took over I found myself absolutely addicted to it. I often check the amount of pages left in a book to estimate what might happen, but I read each one thoroughly wishing it not to end. Indeed the story in the book of the journey versus the destination was how I read it from then on. I absolutely adored it, and when I've got the emotional strength to read it again I definitely will, which is again rare for me to do. I would recommend this not just as a romantic novel but a life lessons one which I'd say almost anyone will enjoy. Have to go now as I'll probably ... Read More:

I have read many books and all of Marian Keyes and is one of the worst books i have ever read! It took me 4 and a half weeks to read and couldn't wait to finish it so I could a better book! It was far to long but u never get to know any of the characters properly, starts off funny and then gets a bit depressing. Very dissapointed!

If you haven't yet joined the Indridason fanclub - I'd recommend reading the Erlandur books in order (first one is Tainted Blood), because. although the stories sit well on their own, there are themes and threads that develop through the series. There's a strong similarity to the Wallender books of Hening Mankell - in particular the underlying sense of a man struggling to find his place in a world whose values are changing - but in my view Indridason stands out from any of his Scandinavian contemporaries for the quality of writing. He has a very simple style but a fantastic sense of narrative structure and characterisation; very understated (exceptionally well translated), and with a minimum of anachronistic plot devices. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys Mankell, Rankin, Jo Nesbo or Stieg Larson
