... and that's how we like it!

Cato and Macro are back and they are in great shape. Having rested a bit after their last assignment, they are once again ready to do the deeds that need doing to defend the glory that is Rome.

OK, so Scarrow's Eagle-series may not be 'great literature' but it sure as rain in your summer-holiday is great swash-buckling.

I really enjoy this series, and this, the latest addition, doesn't disappoint.

With "A Snowball in Hell" (I do recommend you read "A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away" and "The Sacred Art of Stealing" before this one) Brookmyre is again his sharp funny self with a very dark side. Simon Darcourt is a celebrity killer in more ways than one. First he enjoys murdering famous people, especially ones who have no talent or reason for being famous. But he has become a celebrity in his own right via his posting real time video of his killings and to make things really interesting he lets visitors to his site vote on wether the victim lives or dies. This makes for some wonderfully black humor. Darcourt's website is getting more hits than Google and he is more famous then the last winner of American Idol. It is again up to ... Read More:

First Sentence: The high chandeliers in the Great Hall of Lincoln's Inn were ablaze with candles, for it was late afternoon when the play began.

Henry VIII has asked to marry Catherine Parr and England is in a time of religious turmoil.

The Dissolution of the monasteries is done but now Henry, and the reformists, are moving back toward Catholic ways, under the King rather than the Pope, at the same time as the rise in Protestantism. An English version of the Bible has been published, but only Churches and the upper class are allowed to read it.

One of lawyer Matthew Shardlake's closest friends has been murdered and his body publicly displayed. Brought before Archbishop Cramer, Matthew learns this is ... Read More:

A warning before you continue any further - do not read this book unless you have absolutely nothing to do for the next few days of your life. The Time Travellers Wife is so addictive that you will not be able to put it down until you've reached the very last full stop, and even after that you will not be able to think of anything else for days.

The story, simply put, is one of enduring love. Henry DeTamble is a tall, dark and handsome 28 year old alcoholic librarian with some manner of genetic disorder which causes him to uncontrollably disappear for small intervals of time and instead appear in the past or(more uncommonly) the future. Clare Abshire, tall + thin with long red hair, is an artist who is only 8 years younger than Henry, yet meets ... Read More:

If your feeling in need of a pick me up book this tale of war time romance, positive views in everything and the never ending English Spirit will hit the spot. Impossible to read for long in a bad mood, it takes you to the locations and places described.
Though this book isnt perhaps as fast paced and as punchy as a Grisham, or a Cussler, it isnt trying to get into that market, it is however at the top of its own game.
All in all, one of the best, most feel good books I have read for a long time.

I bought this book because of the numerous reviews raving about it but I ended up feeling let down by it. I found quite a few problems with it. For a start it could have done with some more editing, the plot is really not interesting enough to fill a book of this length and I began to find it very repetitive. The central character Joseph had the same boring thoughts and dreams over and over again. I think it was supposed to be haunting but it was just dull. Right from the start I found it difficult to get into.
Another difficulty I had was engaging with the characters because none of them were likeable really. Also as others have pointed out Joseph's life is quite ridiculously tragic, it was like being in a soap opera where people he loves drop like flies in very mean ways. I suppose ... Read More:

A charming, enjoyable book with a thoughtful slant on morals and kindness. The slips between two time periods were handled proficiently and without jarring. For me it was a relaxing, happy read with much to feel at home with. I live near the area and the descriptions of the lanes, villages and people were all well drawn. Not a book to discuss at length but one to pass on to a friend with the knowledge that you are giving them a treat.

Victoria Hislop has taken a passionate part of Spanish history and turned it into a disappointing and flat novel. Although the book has been well-researched, it appears to have been a hastily written and none of the characters really spring to life, especially Sonia who is rather a pathetic creature compared to her sensual mother! The use of flashbacks does not work at all and there is a complete lack of suspense. My advice - read 'Winter in Madrid' by C J Sansom.

Simon Kernick proves to be an excellent thriller writer. The novel "Deadline" is a clear reflection of this. Word of mouth of communication persuaded me to actually read the novel. I am really satisfied with what I have read, as it is a well paced thriller novel that really intrigued me for long periods. The plot to the novel always surprised you, when you think it is all over.

The Deadline comprises an explosive plot, credible characters and a well portrayal of the criminal world of London. The suburban life is the key background of the novel. The story is about an ordinary businesswoman Andrea, who's daughter kidnapped by mysterious attackers and she is imposed an ransom to ensure the safe return of the daughter. What are the main motives for the kidnapping? Who can she trust? How ... Read More:

I first read this book as a compulsory text for school and since then have read it countless number of times. It is such a beautiful story that is relevant to every society. You must take your time reading it and not rush it because there are so many hidden depths and meanings. "Shoot all the bluejays you want but remember it is a sin to kill a mockingbird". Everyone must read this book, it's beautiful.
