Perhaps the most over-rated book of all time. A book that boasts absolutly no substance and is sure to kill anyone who has even the slightest slither of personality. For me this book exemplifies everything wrong with the critical world; distinctly average and even poor books and films etc. are hailed as materpieces due to the alledged 'body of thourght' behind them. I can assure you there is no 'thought' here, at least none above the mundane and enfantile.
I am fully aware of the 'messages' such as 'material gain is worthless', however these values are extremly rudimentary and are learnt as a child. Essentially, 'The old man and the sea' tells us nothing that we didn't already know and, perhaps more impotantly, is just a crap story. ... Read More:

I read the reviews and decided to buy the book based on the high proportion of 5* ratings. I was not disappointed!

The book is the size of an average paperback, has a protective clear plastic sleeve, glossy pages, stunning photographs & great summaries on key facts of interest about each bird - definitely the best £7.99 I've spent in a long time!

To polarise a needle to use as a compass, Do NOT wrap a wire round it and leave it connected for 5 MINUTES ....to a battery.. You can just touch the wires onto a battery for a couple of seconds to do the same job..and not waste a maybe essential battery.( you are shorting it out ) and that`s never a good idea..You can polarise a needle just by hitting it with a stone onto another stone..the molecules rearrange themselves with the Earths own magnetic field.
Also, in the section dealing with electrocution, providing the victim has dry clothing, you can pull him/her clear without fear of a shock yourself.grab their coat or pullover or whatever..The book says wait for the current to be turned off or something similar.....There may not be time !

There was not much new in this edition and I wished I had stuck with the previous version. It's misleading to call it 'new' when so much of the content is 'old'. It represented poor value in my opinion. Also, some of the walk descriptions are vague and not that easy to follow with great chunks of the routes not described at all.

This is a good, useful map. Two sided, each 55cm x 65cm, scale 1:40,000, 2.5cm =1km, which is about 1.5inches = 1 mile. Not quite as good as a British Ordnance Survey map, but better and cheaper (from Amazon) than any maps I saw in Madeira. All the main roads, tourist info, contours, (with good background colouring to indicate height, essential in such a mountainous region), footpath details, with references to walk numbers in guide-books, levadas, a place-name index... There is also a small street-map of the centre of Funchal, but it's really too small to be of use. Collect a free advertising tourist map from your hotel for the centre of Funchal. David Brawn's Madeira Bus & Touring map is also useful if you plan on using local buses.
