Maybe this is not for the very serious walker, but for those of us not up to the longer walks, this provides a very good resource in terms of variety and coverage and the fact it caters for shorter walks. It would not be possible to provide the required level of detail for all 1001 walks in one book, so I think a local map would always be advisable. We are pleased with it.

Having had a Garmin Etrex laying around in my sock draw for a year, and with a planned Scottish walking trip on the horizon, I thought it was time to learn how to use the GPS. The manual was hopeless but this book more than made up for that. Whilst I had to refer to the manual a number of times to find out how to do things on my particular GPS this book took me from sceptical to convinced in one evening. It is clearly if simplistically written, making it very easy to follow. Once I'd followed the book and connected my GPS to the PC (having bought a USB to serial convertor via Amazon) the GPS suddenly became a useful tool rather than an extra weight in the rucksack. All in all it's an excellent book to start making use of the GPS and I can highly recommend ... Read More:

I first saw this book at a branch meeting of the Fly Dresser's Guild but only had time for a brief scan. I am certainly glad I took the plunge and bought my own copy. The instructions and photograph sequences are top notch.

Like any reference work (or text book) one has to concentrate on every word that is written in this book and then go over it again as many times as is necessary for the message to sink in - and then get out your fly rod and practice. I would recommend the use of a highlighter to emphasise the key phrases in order to enable you to lift out of the text those parts that are particularly important to you as an individual, even at the expense of defacing it. This is after all a learning tool, not a classical work that requires appropriate reverence.

I too am endeavouring to become a qualified game angling instructor, but very quickly realised after day one of the Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Angling Course (run by the Salmon and Trout Association here in the ... Read More:

I have to say that for me (can ski anything on-piste) this book is fab!!

It is ideal for good skiers who have had formal lessons in the past on snow. It won't make as much sense if you were taught by mates as the chapters build on the traditional snowplough, stem turn, parallell approach. Having learnt in Italy and France i got so far and then started to struggle on sustaining good technique on steeper slopes. In the last couple of years I have had 2 private lessons by an English & a Canadian instructor who were able to communicate the 'feel and flow' parts of the skiing technique that I was missing on carving skis. Like many I tried to apply the way I had been taught 15 years ago to newer carving ski technology which does not work.

At last - a straightforward and well-illustrated guide to map and compass. Like a good long guided walk in the hills, this book takes the reader from simple beginnings such as why we need to learn navigation skills, to more challenging areas such as route planning and GPS. It's approach is to ask questions of the reader at all stages, making us focus on the many excellent illustrations (photos, map extracts, sketches) that are the great strength of the book. With many of us now walking abroad, it is pleasing to see the author compare maps from different countries. This is an ideal guide for anyone starting out on the hills - Duke of Edinburgh schemers, casual weekend roamers, etc. - and for the more experienced who are interested in improving their mountain navigation.

This is what I have been waiting for a long time. Hostile Habitats has everything there is to know about the Scottish hills. All sections are explained in a way that normal mortals can understand it. There are sections about geology, plants, mammals, birds and human traces. The most important living things are explained individually. Very well laid out. Most of the wildlife parts can be also used for hills in Wales and England.
