I received this as a gift and despite the fact that I have more cookery books at home than I know what to do with I have made good use of this one. The recipes are easy to follow and are illustrated, which I find helpful as I like to know what I'm aiming for. I thoroughly recommend the oven baked soy marinated cod (I make this regularly now) and also the Wok-It Chinese Chicken salad. I actually find it a shame that they have included the words 'low fat' into the cover - this will probably lead some people to assume the recipes are tasteless, which they certainly are not! Even if you are not on a diet you will enjoy creating the recipes in this book and I defy you not to find one you will want to make again!

I was given this book when I became a Granny, and I love it, many of the recipes remind me of when I was a child. I love the way it is written and the new 'take' on old themes. A great and practical cook book!

I bought the pair for my mum a year ago and they have ended up going round the whole family, young and old. Yes they have a nostalgic feel to them and it's food that nana used to make but thats what makes them so good, we are now having to live as if things are rationed, the meals that were made back then weren't full of e numbers and other nasty things (lets face it, we've all become alergic to them all anyway), they were wholesome and filling with no waste, after all I'm sure it's not only me that loves bubble and squeek on a monday with the sunday roast left overs. I got this book as a christmas present from my sister and brother in law and loved it immediately. It still is one of the most beautiful cookery books I own and I've got about 300 - 400, roughly estimated. But it is not only extremely beautiful, it's also interesting to read (and no, it's not supposed to be a memoir, it says " a world of family recipes" on the front, so it will obviously be mainly about cookery) and the recipes are just great. I'm the queen of cheesecakes at work now, just because of Tessa's marvellous "Ricotta Tart with a Chocolate Crust". The ricotta makes a wonderfully light cake (but if you can't get any just use full fat cream cheese) and the added orange juice and rind give it a fresh moreish taste. People will definitely ... This was rushed to tie in with the TV programme, and a sympathetic editor could have ironed out a few repetitions. But there are some great things here. It is romantic but grounded at the same time, and MPW offers an interesting perspective on the organic / waste debate. The photograph of the Wally Ladd trifle is so elegant and there are honest pictures of hunting, shooting and fishing. There is some terrific dry humour in the commentaries. I think there is more to be written about and by MPW - he is clearly a great and complex character with many obsessions and talents. He ought to be given a fuller rein and a loyal and loving editor to get to the heart of what he really is and what he has to offer.

This takes the anxiety out of entertaining, knowing all the recipes are tried and true and you can relax and magically produce delicious food without apparent effort. Mary Berry is a must in every kitchen.

I was shocked to see that most recipes use Soy Milk/tofu which is proven to be very unhealthy, as soy is only good when it's fermented! Beside that, it also uses a lot of Margarine, which is also proven unhealthy and canola oil. :( The pictures are nice though ...

As a complete novice to breadmaking, I was stunned by this tour de force. I had not realised that we are eating such rubbish in the average sliced pan. This book shows how ordinary mortals can bake delicious and nutritious bread from two ingredients (flour and water) using time as the third ingredient. Along the way, the author decries the state of modern UK bread - soft gooey pap which reflects the sickening influences of the nanny state and big business. I have followed the recipes and produced bread which is consistently devoured by my three kids. If you're looking for a book which gives recipes in which you cook everything in one pot (as the title suggests), then look elsewhere. Many of the recipes would more easily (and quickly) be prepared using a pan and the hob. Many of them involve a fair bit of preparation before using the slow cooker. I feel a little deceived..........

Before writing this review I had a read through some of the others that had been written. I was most interested by the one star reviews, irritation at the inclusion of the authors memories, and the categorisation of the recipes by colour. The organisation of the recipes by colour, I feel, is quite a nice novel touch - certainly pleasing on the eye. As for the inclusion of the authors memories? I thing this is one of the nicest things about the book. Tessa Kiros has an evocative way of writing and I can lose myself in her words (or they draw up my memories).
