This was a truly amazing read. It hooks you in and then will not let go. You live and breathe Bombay in the '80's and all the vibrant and diverse people who lived there. Gregory David Roberts is on a journey and you are right there with him whether you want to be at that particular moment or not. You find yourself living in a different world with people of many different experiences and mind sets, and yet you realise that there is always something to learn. I suppose that is what makes the book so appealing, it is dealing with the real world good and bad, dignified and shabby. Gregory David Roberts is obviously a deep thinker and is clearly drawn to philosophy and he captures in his writing the ability to portray the world on his terms ... Read More:

My 8 year old daughter has had this book for many years along with Room on the Broom, Monkey Puzzle, Gruffalo etc. and I have to say that all of the books are brilliant (even a cynical 41 year old like me enjoys reading them repeatedly....to her of course). They are all cleverly written (in a rhyming style) and beautifully illustrated (with some repeat themes / characters popping up in various books - look out for them). I would strongly recommend buying this or Room on the Broom as an introduction to the world of Donaldson / Scheffler.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book considering the last two made me wonder why I kept on with the series. I enjoyed the interaction between Nicholas and Lara and how he had to readjust his Carpathian male way of thinking. However, the men appear even more chauvinistic in this book which grated on me. Although the males with lifemates seem to agree with them about their right to fight, when an argument ensues the males with lifemates appear patronising especially as the women were 'treated' to their males fighting flawlessly as they didn't have to worry about them. Two other things that bothered me was the abruptness of the ending. Also, writing in the 'old language' was beyond annoying as, for me, it stopped the flow of the book especially ... Read More:

My son aged 10 is heavily into Dr Who and was dying to get this annual. He was impressed by this new one and found it both interesting and entertaining. Although a cheap gift he rated it above some of the PS2 games he was given!!! Would recommend this annual for any Dr Who fan.

When the German army invaded Paris in 1940, Agnes Humbert a strong minded, politically aware art historian, immediately knew that she had to 'do something', the thought of accepting the invasion was anathema to her and she helped to form one of the first organised groups of the French Resistance. The speed with which this was set up and began to operate was staggering. She had excellent contacts and friends in literary and journalistic circles and an underground newspaper, combating the German propaganda machine, was printed and circulated around Paris. It was simply amazing that they managed to keep this going and out of the hands of the authorities for nearly a year before they were betrayed and she was arrested and thrown into prison. Seven ... I was first introduced to Thomas Hardy at the age of 12 via an extract of this book in a girls' annual. Just that one short passage was enough to make me want to read the rest of the novel and from then I became a Hardy fan and this remains my favourite Hardy. If you have never read Hardy this would be a wonderful introduction to a great writer.

This is the tragic tale of Tess Durbeyfield, Thomas Hardy's favourite heroine. For a visually stunning depiction of Tess I would also recommend Roman Polanski's "Tess", starring Natassja Kinski.

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector

At Joan Patterson Associates we use this as the course text for our 5 day PTLLS course. A wide range of students working in a variety of settings have said what a great introduction to post 16 teaching this book provides. Students find the book a great help when completing their assignments and reference to it for the level 4.

A great book pitched at the right level for the PTLLS course.
