I usually avoid French Historians, just because their distinct style is not normally to my liking. This book was an exception, and I'll admit it surprised me. It is dense and anectotal, so I wouldn't recommend it for long reads, but if taken in small doses it's wonderful! She's very, very funny, which says a lot, because French writers usually don't make me chuckle. It took me a month to read it, and it was worth the time.

114.Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table by: Ruth Reichl
March 31, 1999
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table
I first read Ruth Reichl's 'Garlic and Sapphires' and loved her writing style and passion for food so much that I bought her earlier books!

I wasn't disappointed. This is another beautiful memoir describing Reichl's early years and experiences with food. It will be a while before I forget Alice's apple dumplings, her mother's totally orange Halloween dinner or her travels through Tunisia. The book also includes a smattering of recipes.

Absolutely delicious, a must for foodies!

Ihave to say that this book rates as one of my favorite books. Ms Fisher writes with so much wit and intelligence. This book (or set of books really),is more than a book about eating, its a book about everything important - love, good times, bad times, and about the art of making the very best of what you have.

Martin Jones is a bioarchaeologist - he nearly invented the discipline. In "The Molecule Hunt" he not only explained that rather cumbersome term; he demonstrated what a fabulous array of information about our ancestors and us this new science has revealed. In this work, he utilises that data and enlarges the view to examine human societies in their environmental contexts. An insightful and comprehensive account, Jones explains the roots of our mealtime habits, along with the steps we passed through in reaching them.

He notes at the outset that humans are unique in gathering around a cooking fire or other central location and feeding together facing their fellows. For any other species, eye contact is a threat display. With us, it's ... Read More:
