This is not 'what fork to use' but why we think using the correct fork is important, how the fork originated, forks around the world and when there are no forks. It's a big book full of facts but the writing is light, elegant and often poetic. I can't praise this enough. It is especially valuable to writers as a reference book about eating habits, a source of fascinating and inspiring tales and an example of excellant prose.

Any aspiring young person who wishes to join the catering profession should have a copy of this book. It is thorough, well researched, modern and expresses all the values which surround the British Culinary Arts tradition. This is a valuable edition to any ones cookery book collection. We take an off season break (ie when it's raining but inexpensive!) in Catalonia each year with friends. I bought this book after one such and it now comes with us on each trip. Jenny Chandler has filled the book with some excellent, often very straight forward, recipes ranging geographically from Galicia on the Northwestern tip of Spain, right across to Barcelona. She does a good job of explaining regional differences in ingredients and technique and enlivens the book with plenty of relevant anecdote. In addition, the illustrating photos are of very high quality and Chandler provides a clear and concise guide to the wines of the region that makes a very welcome change from just buying Rioja. Haven't you missed the point somewhat? The many people who appreciate this book are not necessarily interested in saving money. Many of the dishes that I have cooked and served based on the book have been well within my budget and well received by my guests, because they are wholesome, generally healthy and represent good old British heritage. If I find something new and interesting, I do not stint on what I eat; my attitude to food is that you get what you pay for. Is toasted cheese really beyond your resources? I suspect you may be a cousin - if so I think you should stick to the various US burger outlets being inflicted on us - it's the nearest thing to millers you'll be able to experience, and that is why it's cheap. ...
