I bought this book having read the other online reviews. I have to say, it was a grave mistake. I found it cloying and patronising in the extreme, and was profoundly irritated by the faux friendly tone. I gave up about three quarters of the way through and sent it to a charity shop, together with 'Family Happiness' purchased the same time, which I forced myself to finish.

I was advised to read this by a chef, best piece of advice I have had for ages. If there was a book like this for each area of interest, you wouldn't need many books!

It took me a while to get through this encyclopedic epic, but it was well worth the read. Like a fine wine, it wasn't heavy going, but a revelation of 'fact stranger than fiction' mini histories. Hysterically funny in parts, it was as hard to put down as a good cocktail, and just as intriguing and enjoyable to digest. I now consider myself - a bit like the author- educated in the art which controls so much of most people's everyday life.

Jenny Chandler has filled the book with some excellent, often very straight forward, recipes ranging geographically from Galicia on the Northwestern tip of Spain, right across to Barcelona. She does a good job of explaining regional differences in ingredients and technique and enlivens the book with plenty of relevant anecdote. In addition, the illustrating photos are of very high quality and Chandler provides a clear and concise guide to the wines of the region that makes a very welcome change from just buying Rioja.
