I've been teaching modern Greek for more than 10 years. This course book is not suitable for students who are serious about learning Greek. It's ok for those who, as tourists, want to be able to order a souvlaki in a greek taverna. I would be very suspicious of teachers of modern Greek who make use of this book. Very disappointing. I'd stick with the Communicate in Greek course books instead.

Sequels aren't meant to be as good as the original, are they, but having enjoyed David Long's SPECTACULAR VERNACULAR last year I had to have this one, and I'm not disappointed. Far from it. In fact for anyone bored with all those London books which just go over the same old ground again (Tower of London, yawn) these two books have been a revelation to me. Packed full of places and buildings most of us don't even notice, and with every one photographed and explored by an author with a real talent for the subject, they're original, funny, and above all fascinating in terms of the detail, the history and the personalities they describe and which together make London what it is today.

The old 'Weinreb' was the best single-volume reference book on London, despite a few minor but still niggling errors. Happily most of these have been pulled out, the book's been expanded with more entries and even better illustration, and I had no hesitation whatever in grabbing a copy as soon as it went on sale. There's nothing to touch it, frankly: magnificent, endlessly fascinating, and outstanding value even before the discount. My 'Desert Island Discs' read, as indeed it's been for the last 25 years.

This book will charm you, scare you and grip you like no other! Lois is an adventure biking goddess but if you're not into bikes don't let that put you off. At the heart of this book is an interesting travel story amusingly told. Buy it, you won't be able to put it down!

I have read this book twice! This book will tell you all you need to know about Venice. Its well written which makes it an easy read, so many books have been written on Venice, but one is clear and broken down into key sections.

There are some great features to Amazon: competitive prices, the chance to browse for a vast selection of books at any hour of the day, generally good service. Here is a bad thing: judging a book by its cover (or the reputation of the author). I bought this because I have enjoyed some of Theroux's TV programmes and it sounded a bit different. Theroux's plan is to revisit subjects he had met during the making of a TV series on weird Americans and see how they have changed in the intervening few years. The problem is that it doesn't quite work and I think Theroux realises that quite quickly. The writing is engaging and honest but it's partly a story of tracking the people down and partly a story about what they said when he found them. Neither story ... Read More:

I got this book while I was thinking about doing some travelling, it is full of usefull information and is clearly organised. I found it a good read even if you weren't planning on a trip.

they were probably posted by the authors' friends. There is no other explanation for those positive ratings. This is the first book in years I've stopped reading after forcing myself through the first one hundred pages. Boring, boring, boring. Two guys overstretch a very weak story to make a book and they do so by narrating it in such a ghastly way that you start hating yourself for having fallen for the reviewers' hype. I had my doubts but I decided to believe the "readers" ratings. Believe me, there is no way in hell so many people can honestly have found this book to be funny, interesting or in any way readable. Based on this book I wish to never ever meet anyone called Dave Gorman. Ah yes, it took two to fabricate it! Gawd... What I do mind is how rudely and egotistically ... Read More:

I'm not a trucker, but I bought this atlas, and I rate it highly. The reason? The large scale, which makes it very easy to plan trips, whether for business or pleasure. Even the smallest minor road is visible, and showing the contours of the land is a nice bonus. It is also useful to know where petrol stations are: we tend to take holidays in fairly remote spots. Okay, I am never going to need the low bridge information, but it's still the best road atlas out there.
