This is a brilliant boxed set, i managed to get this for under £45 which is incredible given the books individually are priced at £13 each !! The attention to detail in these books are second to none - buy it now before the price goes back up !!

I really enjoyed reading the first part of this book as Ted travelled down through Africa. He seemed focussed on the journey ahead, seemed interested in all the contrasting people around him and included lots of detail about his bike. From South America onwards however, he seemed to lose interest in the trip and dwelled far too long on certain events. He also skipped through whole countries in a matter of a couple of pages. His philosophising on whether he might be a God was irritating and at this point I found myself skipping pages. Disappointing in places.

A book of out of the way, out of the ordinary camping is a terrific idea, which is why I bought the book. Many of the sites featured look amazing, and they have all been personally 'road-tested' by the CC crew. So far so very good. However there is a (quite a big in my view) downside in that although there is on the surface a large choice of sites, in reality this amounts to an average of less than four sites in each of the 23 counties/regions represented. So if you want to use this to plan a trip, rather than take it with you, then its really good and will get you to some really interesting off-the-beaten-track places (and I do intend to try some of them out), but much less use as something you carry around in your panniers or glove ... Lots of ideas on how to take trains and get to places. Have started to use it for travels, and am now taking much more civilised trips..... with the added bonus that you have no airport hassles, travel greener, take as much whisky and toothpaste as you like, and see the countryside! Read it and be inspired. It can work out just as cheap as air travel!

Needing to clear some space on my bookshelves I have decided to reacquaint myself with Bill Bryson's travel books before Bookcrossing them. This one was written in 1990, first published in 1992 and the edition on my bookshelf in 1998. I enjoyed reading this travelogue of his tour of some of the major cities of Europe, many of those mentioned which I have visited myself during the last forty years. Of those that I have not I think that Sofia in particular may well have changed beyond recognition, Eastern Europe having undergone the most changes in the last eighteen years. Whilst one might not always agree with Bryson's viewpoint it is none the less an amusing read, though one must also accept that in some aspects it can seem very dated. Certainly ... Read More:

Whilst travelling through Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Paragruay and Brazil, I quickly realised that this book was not going to be much help 'in the field'. It is in urgent need of up dating; many of the hostels and hotels mentioned have either closed, renamed or vanished off the face of the earth. I used this guide to plan my trip, but upon arrival it did little more than fill up space in my rucksack. The maps are quite useful...to a point. Most of the restaurants, hostels etc are not in the right place on the map (which i found out to my cost when lugging my rucksack around Ascunsion). I have had some wonderful days out with this book. It is highly recommended, an interesting often educational read with great photography.

I must be honest and say that I started this book in tandem with another just because I didn't think I'd be terribly interested in the subject matter, much as I love Bryson. By the end of the second chapter, I wanted to book a ticket on the next flight to Perth. The flora, fauna and folks that inhabit this wondrous country intrigue me strangely. Bill Bryson is one of the funniest writers I have ever encountered. I find myself reading bits aloud at the slightest hint of encouragement. I challenge anyone to read his discussion of running through a park trying to get away from some scary dogs, and ending up in an unsuspecting housewife's back garden, without laughing out loud. If you can get through that section without giggling, you have nerves of steel. Read More:
