Books : Beginning ASP.NET 3.5: in C# and VB: In C# and VB (Programmer to Programmer)
I made a decision about three months ago that I would use ASP.NET to create a new database-driven website. I immediately bought a couple of heavyweight reference books that came well recommended. However, as soon as I opened their covers I realised that my previous background as an Access VBA programmer was insufficient to let me leapfrog the early stages of the fairly steep ASP.NET learning curve.

A book called Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 seemed like an obvious choice to fill that gap. Luckily, it does that job very well. Unlike the two reference books I got initially, this is one that is worth reading from cover to cover. Imar Spaanjaars covers a very wide range of topics in the demo application that is the core of the book, without ... Read More:

I build websites for a living and I hand code almost all of the static ones. I bought this book for my wife and worked through it with her, so that she could help with general coding, and was taken back by how well the subject is tackled. It is a fun book that delivers a good depth of information and in a manner that sticks with the reader. I didn't have to supplement any of the explanations with more information, and the book did a far better job than I could have done at explaining the basics. Please understand that this book does not cover every aspect of the subject, and will not make you an advanced web coder, but it will equip you with the ability to design a decent web site and to delve much deeper into the subject without being put off by more ... This is a book which clearly discusses all the aspects of the ICT National Curriculum, giving practical examples of how to deliver the content successfully. Issues such as the difference between ICT skills and ICT capability are tackled and discussed. Also the difference between discrete teaching of ICT and the use of ICT to enhance teaching and learning in other subjects is outlined. Anyone using the QTS Scheme of Work for ICT will benefit from reading this. This is the only book I've come across which successfully delivers both practical and theoretical ideas successfully.

A must for Primary teachers and for trainee teachers.

Awful style of writing, content is all over the place and uses too much formal notation and set theory. If you are looking to learn new things here, then this book isn't for you. I have had the displeasure of sitting an exam based on the material from this book.
The authors seem to use as much complicated language as possible, making seemingly simple concepts sound a lot harder to understand. They will introduce new ideas in an ad hoq manor, mid sentence making revision painful indeed.
Unless like me you have an exam on the topics specific to this book, I'd recommend the Tanenbaum book, who has a better grasp of writing.

This book avoids most of the pitfalls of Ed Haletky's work. It has been properly proof-read, edited and is not as dry.

McCain comes across an accomplished technical author and makes good use of visuals to explain the concepts he's introducing, an area where I felt the Haletky text was lacking. McCain also has a knack of making obscure concepts accessible using straightforward and readily understood examples.

The explanation of virtual networking is particularly good and the author clears up some of the fog surrounding ESX and the iSCSI protocol, especially the need for service console and VMkernel ports. Having implemented iSCSI solutions based on the official VMware documentation, I still found this text to be useful.

Excellent book, written by two of the most prolific contributors on the Oracle Apex forums - they've helped me out many a time.

The book has taken a long time to make it to print, but is worth the wait; whilst there are plenty of on-line resources to get you started with Apex, this book takes you through the next steps in depth. It is really well written and easy to read, with clear and useful example code throughout.

If you use, or are looking into using Apex, then this book is a must.

The book itself is very well written, starts with the basics and gives a good overview of unreal and how the technology works before starting tutorials.

The tutorials start with the very basics, making this good for those new to Unreal modding (like myself), alongside the tutorial are screenshots to help you along.

The big problem with this book is the CD. It comes with a free trial of the Unreal Editor, however all the examples and textures on the CD require the commercial version to work.

The version of Maya on the CD is version 5.0, the most recent Maya is 8.5 and you cannot get a v5.0 unlock key without using illegal sources. There is no key on the book.

Overall it's a great book, but if you don't ... Read More:

I'm disappointed with this book. I hoped to find much more depth about Scrum than can be gleaned from the Web. What it has to say, it says well, and the general point (that Scrum is better) is competently argued and substantiated. The reasons I can only give three stars are: firstly, the quality of graphics is appalling (could be bettered by a six year old with a Mac Plus); secondly, the price: this book would be fine for £[...].

Be warned, this book is a bit of a door step. Very detailed and generally very good. I would probably recommend some online sites first to get a flavour for the types of algorithms you might need and then selectivly dive into Russel and Norvig to get a more in depth view of the implementation. I feel that this book is not really intedned for cover to cover reading, rather as a resource to allow you to understand the algorithms you implement.

An invaluable tool if you are studying AI at pretty much any level.
