I bought this book because it's Gordon Ramsay and it was on special on Amazon. I found the book badly laid out and the pages too busy looking. The recipes are good but I've hardly used it because I don't like the look (or feel!) of the book.

Everything you could possibly need to know in one handy compact book. Every cook should have a copy of this on their shelf - it is like having a mini delia in your kitchen which you can refer to as and when you need it. Fab!

Have this book for 6 months and have tried many recipes from within very successfully - one of the best cook books I have bought.

Once again, Rachel has written a book with recipes that you will actually be able to use in everyday life, not just when you've got the time to do some specialist shopping and spend hours in the kitchen. The book is called "favourite food at home" and that's just what you get, if you're looking for something more fiddly or to impress your guests with your brilliant cooking techniques, you should look somewhere else (Gary Rhodes is my tip here). But if all you want is good family meals, this book really gives you a wide variety of choice and you won't be dissapointed. Of course, you've got to have a basic knowledge of cookery to succeed, but that's the case with practically every cookery book apart from those (often quite boring) step-by-step things ... i tried the mincepies which were a great new taste with the marzipan in, I also copied the christmas cake with the stockings around - again a grea idea. Also did the shortbread recipe but decorated them in my own way but also lovely. Oh and I did the Christmas pudding recipe with the grated butter!! yes quite tricky but well worth it best pudding I've ever had and even when I made it.

This, like many of Marguerite Patten's other 'Basics' other books, is simply invaluable. Particularly key, now many of us are growing our own & therefore understand the seasonal 'glut' dilemma - there are, I promise you, only so many cucumbers you can eat in a week ........

Great book, loads of delicious recipes, and explains how ice cream works. Also has a good (if belt-busting) section of cakes and biscuits (presumably so that you can bash them into bits afterwards and add them to your ice cream). The beginning of this short book is a history of Ben and Jerry's which was interesting but a bit twee. My only complaint is that all quantities are given in the rather vague US 'cups' rather than millilitres or grams (or even pounds and ounces). So you're told to put a quarter cup of this, with a half cup of that. Don't suppose a bit more or a bit less of anything will hurt your ice cream, but slightly annoying to have to convert quantities every time.

Charles Handy is arguably the UK's top business "guru", but in my opinion this title somewhat diminishes his life's work, which has gone beyond matters of simple business administration into a philosophy of life and work, and is imbued with a spirituality that I find infectious (even though I am not a very spiritual person). This, however, is his seminal management text, and there is but a hint of the philosophical musings of "The Empty Raincoat" and "The Hungry Spirit". Understanding Organisations was first published in 1976, and my fourth edition (I don't know why Amazon describes this as the third edition - that must be an error) was published in 1993, with a revised introduction in 1999. As always with Rachel's books, the recipes are easy to follow and turn out the way you expect them to - so you get great results with a minimum of fuss. There is something for every occasion in this book, as the chapter titles show: "Food for the Soul", "Childhood Favourites", "Making Memories", "Something to Celebrate", "The Lazy Sunday", "An Elegant Afternoon", Pleasure Without the Guilt", "Food for Romance", "For the Love of Chocolate" and "Classic Dishes". I tried the "White Chocolate Buns" and they were dead easy to make, I even managed to whip them up before going to work, something I normally wouldn't be able to do, since I'm not exactly a member of the rise and shine party. I bought this book on a whim and have just completed my fifth cake and am in the process of devising my sixth cake - the pictures and instructions are brilliant, I had never iced a cake before and now feel competent enough to make them for people other than family! Would highly recommend this, and looking at other peoples reviews am going to buy book 2! Well worth it.
