This is a book that you read slowly.

And slowly you are drawn in and understand the magnitude of what really is happening.

i often forgot who was narrating the book... eeryyyyy

Dont breeze through this book, take your time, let it sink in and it will be a fabulous experience.

I especially liked the way those BOLD letters appear... sumarises so much and helps understand even more.

I have read all Rankin`s previous works - also the non-Rebus titles but I have never been bored. That is until this one......

In short it took me 2 weeks to accomplish the reading and all the time I felt like putting it away, but hey, one owe Rankin to read it to the end.
And I did.
I`m sure the next one will be better, indeed couldn`t be much worse.

I have been waiting for this book for years.... and now when I have read it, I hope it was never written. IT does not at all live up the the Pillars of earth. Neither does it compare to some of the other good books Ken Follet has written. 150 pages less and it might have been ok. I try to end all the books I start, but this was heavy. The story line was light, some of the "histories" within the story are totally out of scope (like nuns in french war). I read 6 books in my vacation. This was the worst.

lent this book to my daughter before I read it by which time I had seen the film. The film was moving and believeable - up to a point. Why his parents took so little interest in Bruno's coming and goings and why the maid takes little interest in his whereabouts is a plot device. Obviously the subject matter is harrowing and I cried at the film but not when reading the book which I found a bit of a letdown. Very simply written and perhaps more suitable for younger readers.

I bought this comic based partly on the positive feedback it has received and the hype surrounding it; however such hype can create unrealistic expectations. That isn't to say Watchmen isn't a fantastic work of fiction, simply it wasn't what I expected.

The story begins with an intriguing murder mystery that helps to introduce one the books greatest characters, Rorschach. After this promising start the story slows down considerably with the majority of the book dedicated more to the development of the main characters rather than the story itself. The deliberate slow pacing and exploration of the inner landscape can make reading Watchmen difficult as developments in the main story take an age to develop.

Some of the characters in Watchmen ... Read More:

This book takes place in the beggining of the 1900s. It is ideal for those who like rich English family novels full of intrigues. The book is told on first person by the servant of the house that is now on her late 90s. Thus, the author keeps going back and fowards in time. During her years as a servant, a man kills himself and the only witnesses are two sisters, who after that will never talk to each other again. The story unravells the mystery.
the only aspect I didn't like of this book is that the author keeps on revealling what will happen before it actually does. In spite of this, the ending still came as a total surprise to me.

I found this book captivating, in a "gallows humor" sort of way.

Although written many years ago, and recounting events in the distant past, it should be required reading for anyone in the markets today. More specifically, it should have been required reading a year ago (mid 2007) for those invested in finance and property sectors.

Whether the malaise in those sectors (some stocks down 90%) spreads eventually to the general indexes remains to be seen.

I read this novel with greater speed than usual, because I just so wanted something good to happen to Lewis - I was frightened for him! The novel starts by reminding us that in 1945 most young children hardly knew their fathers as they had been brought up by their mothers whilst the men were at war. Suddenly there's a man in the house and the dynamics of daily life changed dramatically for 7-year-old Lewis. Three years later, the centre of his life was gone and in the 1940/50's bereavemnt counsellors didn't exist, so how was this child expected to come to terms with his loss? Love from others, you would think, but his father shuts him out emotionally and five months later introduces him to his new 'mother'. This was middle-class life in the 50's - when keeping up appearances ... Read More:
