John Darwin's canvas is a broad one but he controls his subject so well that the overall perspective never gets lost. It is all too easy to see the history of the world from an European viewpoint. This book helps us to see it from a global viewpoint and to understand the world the way it is now. The fact that the book is so elegantly written is a considerable bonus!

It's rare to find autobiography as absorbing as this. Not only because of the author's unusual path from the desert of Somalia to the USA via the Netherlands, but also on account of the absorbing writing style. Clear and descriptive, the narrative of her eventful life had a profound impact on this reader. Born and raised in Somalia, Ayaan spent part of her youth in neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Kenya, recounting what it was like to live there through the eyes of a child.

She gives a lively account of the history of Somalia under the dictatorship of Siad Barre, explaining the clan system and comparing the relaxed Muslim practice in that country with the rigidy of Saudi Arabia and the hypocrisy and racism that ... Read More:

This was a really well written and entertaining book. However, the author presupposes a lot of prior knowledge which I sadly lacked, making some of the material a bit challenging - probably not the best choice of read for the inexperienced but I have learned a great deal from reading it. There is a good chance that I'll do so again.

I was a bit disappointed by the balance of the content. I felt there is a disproportionate ammount of text devoted to the social history of the period and too little on the meaty political and military events, e.g the wars of the French revolution. I also thought that given that the book does not flow in strict chronological order then it would have really benefited from the inclusion of a simple summary ... Read More:

Comparisons between this book and Michael Herr's 'Dispatches' are inevitable as they both share the same snapshot story format. The word 'dispatches' also features in 'The Forever War's' subtitle - which I suspect is no coincidence. As I considered Herr's book to be one of finest books on war ever written and I was keen to read this 21st century version.

'The Forever War' is mostly about Afghanistan and Iraq after the American lead invasions, but there are sections prior to that. It's written in a very unbiased manner leaving the reader to draw there own conclusions from the stories involving US troops, insurgents, civilians, politicians and war profiteers. The style of writing is very matter of fact, but rarely dry or dull and never it romanticises ... Read More:

I decided to read "Venice" in preparation for a week-long stay in the Italian city.

Broken into three sections -- The People, The City, The Lagoon -- "Venice" is not a chronological history of the city but a meandering look at its past, present and future. Nor is it a guidebook, although it does contain a mine of information about what to see and where to go.

I think "The Times" probably described it best when they said it was "a classic love letter to Italy's most iconic city", because it is, indeed, a beautiful missive dripping with exquisite descriptions. I found it an enormously engaging and evocative read by an accomplished writer who really knows how to string a simile or two together. For example: "Venice is a cheek-by-jowl, back ... Read More:

I was a total beginner in terms of knowing about the Spanish Civil War and came across this little book in the local branch of Blackwells. As an introductory text, it is superb, the layout of each chapter indicating the main themes which may further be explored.
The author first gives an overview of the origins of the war: the dying colonialism of Spain's Imperial past, the consequent loss of status and role for the officer clas, the rise of a new industrial class, the increasing influence of the professions, all of which came to challenge the traditonal grip of the church and the big estate owners.
The author then situates these political and economic changes within the context of the wider European struggles following the first World War, particulary the ... Read More:

This is not the kind of history that I was expecting - highly populist, focussed more heavily on Elizabeth as a person than on the politics and her decisions as a Queen. Beware.

Eye-opening, honest and intense. I read 'The Islamist' back when it was first released, curious yet naive to the true picture of radical Islam in the West. As with any religion, there are followers who have their faith exploited and distorted. 'The Islamist' is a fascinating account of one man's membership to an extreme organisation, as he fell victim to a way of life that terrifies those on the outside.

Although I read this memoir to fuel my interest in current affairs, the main reason I picked it up is because I wanted to grasp the underlying differences between the beliefs of traditional muslims and those of Islamic extremists. It truely opened my eyes to a culture that I had only been exposed to through the media. Reading books on the subject written in third person are great for gaining ... Read More:

One would have to either question Ms. Shakib's intentions while writing this book or question her sources. As an Afghanistani I found finding a lot of what she wrote suspect. She wanted to mention all the extreme casing ranging from the times of the Soviet to the Taliban era, which would cover a lot, too much in fact. In doing so, she messed up the timeline of the events and even the ages of some of the characters. The historical accuracy is off as well - though the events of what she wrote about are in fact true i.e. Soviets, Mujaheddin, Taliban, etc. there were a few things that she wrote during these eras that did not make sense - giving the idea that perhaps her sources were either lying to her or she filled in gaps without doing her own research.

Somtimes she would go on talking about ... Read More:
