This a frightening but fascinating book, which brings together the keen-eyed journalism Glenny displayed in the 1990s, with a tale of the kind of organised crime that touches us all, whether we know it or not.

Glenny tours the world, and wisely does not try his hand at thriller-writing as he does so. The stories, and their contexts, are fascinating enough to be simply laid out before us. In each case, the most compelling parts are the history and analysis of how that kind of crime took off, in that place and that time. While there are undercurrents that are common throughout, what stands out starkly are the location and era-specific details of the conditions that allow major crime to flourish. I would have liked to have seen something ... Read More:

A fantastic book to serve as an introduction to the complex issue of Africa post World War 2. What makes it such a great book is how straightforward and easy to read it is. However this proves to be it's weakness at times as well, as often it feels like certain issues, in particular economic analysis feels like it is being brushed over in order to make the book easier to read.

Which is a harsh critique, but I cannot pay the book any more of a compliment then stating how much of an eye opener the book was and how it has asked many questions, questions I seek to answer by reading more books about topics covered in the text.

Thank you Sarah for setting out in great detail what many refuse to accept - poor social planning has its consequences. Today, we read of sink estates, crime and poverty unaware that these issues are not new. Sarah Wise has highlighted the attitudes that existed in the 19th century to proper housing for the working classes, and when we look at the problems surround modern day housing estates we find that little has changed. Councils, Housing Trusts and Landlords indifferent to the conditions of their tenants so long as the money is rolling in, and when dissent is voiced, use the law, use the courts use any means possible to avoid the legal, moral and social responsibilities of the provision and maintainence of decent housing. Sarah's message is buried deep ... Read More:

This, like many of Marguerite Patten's other 'Basics' other books, is simply invaluable. Particularly key, now many of us are growing our own & therefore understand the seasonal 'glut' dilemma - there are, I promise you, only so many cucumbers you can eat in a week ........

15.The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: Or the Murder at Road Hill House by: Kate Summerscale

Books : The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: Or the Murder at Road Hill House
"The Suspicions of Mr Whicher" is a fascinating account of a Victorian murder mystery. I was not familiar with the Road Hill House murder case, but it appears to be well-known - which means I had a significant gap in my knowledge of British true crime stories. In 1860, the gruesome and tragic killing of a young boy, Saville Kent, at his countryside home and in the dead of night, gripped the nation, with everyone in Britain, it seems (including, for example, Charles Dickens) having their opinion as to who had committed the brutal murder, and with what motive. The newspapers carried daily reports of developments (or rumours) in the case. Most people were convinced, like the detectives assigned to investigate the boy's death, that the answers lay not in a mysterious ... Read More:

It is now twenty years since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the triumphal proclamation of the victory of capitalism and the 'end of history'. Yet this victory has not made the world a better, safer place. Rather it unleashed imperialst aggression on massive scale, accompanied by ethnic hatred and economic chaos. Unable to justify the bankrupcy of their own system, the apologists for capitalism have continually been forced to exhume the corpse of communism, dress it up in a fresh shroud, and show it to the world.
Nationalist despots like Milosovic and Saddam were described as being essentially communist - being in possession of a strong, murderous state - whilst North Korea was linked in with the Axis of Evil. Even today, the propaganda offensive against China is in ... Read More:

It's easy to work out if you'll like this book. The subject is, how did Nazi Germany administer and rule the countries they conquered and annexed? If you're already rolling your eyes and struggling to keep a yawn down, then clearly this book is not for you. On the other hand, if like me, you think, "wow, what an interesting subject," then you will probably like this book, and it should fulfil your expectations with ease. I only skipped about four pages about France's art scene and underground politics, and a page at the end that waffled on about the post war economy, so it's not a dull difficult to read book.

It goes into a fair amount of detail of how each country was handled differently. Eastern countries like Russia and Poland (the Nazi's took Poland off the ... Read More:

Very, very happy with this book. Spent ages looking at all the different titles then took a chance by ordering this one. Made the right decision. Format is fresh, easy to glance through or read in more detail depending on how much time you have. Plenty of names to choose from, modern, traditional, trendy, a few foreign names but not too many. Ideal for naming baby without having to trawl through crazy names or a multitude of American names. Within ten minutes of reading this i'd found a few good names. Perfect.

This book doesn't do what it says on the cover. "The Real Story of the war in Afghanistan" its says on the cover. No, rather it is the story of the author's decision to write about the war - the over long prologue tells the story of one of his friends who was in the military in afghanistan and how his disillusionment pushed him to look further into the situation - what he found out and his opinion of it all. This is peppered with a selection of tales from soldiers involved in the fighting but if you are looking for "the story of the war" then i'd go elsewhere.
