I bought this book for my 1st trip to HK (about 2 weeks ago). I found it great at 1st that it comes with a pull-out map but realise after; everywhere I go there were maps provided for including the hotel+tubes! The eating places suggested were over-rated and some of the local eats like the famous local HK pastry "wife biscuit" or "wanton noodles" were never mentioned which seems rather tragic.
Also, the nightlife suggested by the book was also so-so........ Instead i got to know about the hottest club (Club Beijing) from a local hairdresser doing my hair. The book also failed to mention that there was a hot bar right above Hotel LKF with fantastic view + the people tend to be dressier on Saturday than Friday!

Overall, i ... Read More:

Just another DK book. Vague coverage of everything with general statements. No evidence of a travelogue of the author.

I can only comment on the section on Almeria region, an area which I have been to a number of times and which I am starting to explore more. I bought this guide to help me find out more and was pleased with the level of information on history, architecture, etc. However I was disappointed with the way the author dismisses so many places because they do not meet what appear to be his lofty criteria of 'old and untouched Spain'. Spain is rapidly changing and development is reaching into even remote areas. This should be accepted and dealt with more maturely.

The target demographic appears to be 'culture vultures' and backpakers. I have been on backpacking holidays but now, as someone on a family holiday, based in a coastal resort ... Read More:

After using the Lonely Planet's 'South East Asia on a Shoestring' I was sceptical of buying another of LP's guides. However for some reason I found myself with 'Central America on a Shoestring' and it actually turned out to be a very handy travel companion. The information was up to date (probably as we somehow managed to be one of the first people to get our hands on it) and the writers remained nicely neutral to cater for various ages and travel desires. Definitely recommended.

I did most of the French side this summer and found it to be spot on. You could be travelling to a town/city by train and reading about your destination, when you get there its totally like the descriptions in the book. Theres lots of background info on Swiss soceity/culture which helps you to chat with the locals by knowing their frame of reference.

If you want a good holiday in Switzerland you have to travel around and see the natural sights, this book is great for planning your itinery.

Only flaw I spotted was I was walking on a bridge in Bern that wasn't on the LP map and was lost for about 2 minutes.

If visiting, its best to buy this before you travel so you can do a day by day plan. I did and it ran very smoothly ... Read More:

On a trip to China I ordered this phrasebook as I have absolutely no knowledge of Mandarin and was told China was quite difficult to get around in due to the low level of English spoken over there.

In truth, at places like airports staff there will speak English and signs will be written in English. In Beijing airport I was even able to ask a janitor a question in English and he understood me. In more rural China (specifically I went to Fujian province) it's very unlikely that you'll come across someone that can speak English, but places still have some signs in English.

Following on from my previous point, the writing system will pose a problem and is one this book cannot solve, not that it aims to. Rather you will just have to be ... Read More:

It's very accurate, lightweight, waterproof and easy to read (not so easy to fold, but I've not yet met a map that is!)

Despite an unusually high number of flaws, this is nevertheless a book that will help you get the most out of your time in Andalucia.

Perhaps I just expect too much of Lonely Planet (LP), but it's their own fault. They've stood by me so many times in so many different places in the past that I was beginning to take everything they told me as The Only Advice In Town. So when I arrived in Seville I quickly got into the LP groove and hit La Bella Estrella, a "jazz bar".

Well, perhaps I'd arrived the day they buried the proprietor, but there was no jazz going on there, so off I went to Naima Café Jazz, happily only about five doors away down Calle Trajan. A bit better, but still not the place I expected based on LP's description. ... Read More:

I bought this, along with the Rough guide to Hong Kong & Macau and the Rough guide DIRECTIONS: Hong Kong & Macau (as I couldn't make up my mind which seemed best!) and have to say, this is the one I used on my trip. The pull out map is a lifesaver & I would have been completely lost without it. The book is divided up into sections by geographical area and then tells you what to see and do/where to eat and drink there. I found this much easier to use than the rough guide, which had an "eating" section - you then had to decide what type of food you were in the mood for and then see if any of the restaurants in that category were in the district you were visiting. Confusing! Obviously, the book is titchy which is great for stuffing in yourr pocket or bag but means there's ... Read More:
