I found the 2002 edition excellent and I'm sure the new edition will be at least as good. Background information is excellent, and the maps and details of individual places of interest (particularly archaeological sites) give all the information one needs to appreciate them in full. Only down side: not many photographs.

Invaluable, had information even the locals we were staying with didn't know: and was so good they asked if they could have it after we left Istanbul. Didn't leave my side the whole time. Isaw this thing in the hands of so many tourists in several different languages, especially on the Bosphorus trip. The maps were very useful for us and so should be for most, provided you know how to read a map. Forget contact lenses and emergency money; if you only bring one thing with you make it this travel guide.

Having recently visited iran in August 2008 I found the Lonely Planet guide to be the most accurate, although my version was 2004 therefore not quite up to date eg the new airport has now opened. It provides information on just about everything you can expect to encounter on your travels through this country. The biggest truth being the Tehran traffic! This being the only issue regarding safety I had throughout my 3 week travels. The pollution makes your eyes water, and the smog hanging over the city cuts out the view of the mountains beyond. Crossing the road made a farce of the green cross code! Yes, you really do wait for others to cross and go with them! Fashions for women are variable. I recently read city of djinns written by william dalrymple. It was such an honour to know that somebody has actually tried, visiting and living in delhi to know the real delhi. It is so amazing to read your own thoughts which have been devloped over the years and know know someone else has thought them too. I believe i can really relate to the book as i was born and brought up in delhi. I had always thought that there is something special about the place and the way Mr Darlmaple has researched and written the book is so beautiful. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading a bit about our history, to know real Indians, not Hindus, not Muslims, Sikhs or Christians but true Indians, then they must read this book. ... Until now we have always rated Lonely Planet guide books highly. However this one on Istanbul is very disappointing and misleading. Although the description of places and buildings is good, the layout is very irritating as you frequently have to change sections to find all the details you want. It is out of date as regards the times places are open and the entry prices charged. The index is far too complicated. Come on Lonley Planet you can do much better than this!
