I recently spent some time touring around New Zealand and this guide was my constant companion(as well as my wife).For your money you get an extemely comprehensive guide to one of the most beautiful countries in the world.From the lush green farmland of the north island to the barren desolate stretches of the south island "Gods own country" has it all. Each area is dealt with in separate chapters and each chapter begins with the "highlights" of the area,so if the highlights dont appeal keep driving! Lots of ideas on how to take trains and get to places. Have started to use it for travels, and am now taking much more civilised trips..... with the added bonus that you have no airport hassles, travel greener, take as much whisky and toothpaste as you like, and see the countryside! Read it and be inspired. It can work out just as cheap as air travel!

A book of out of the way, out of the ordinary camping is a terrific idea, which is why I bought the book. Many of the sites featured look amazing, and they have all been personally 'road-tested' by the CC crew. So far so very good. However there is a (quite a big in my view) downside in that although there is on the surface a large choice of sites, in reality this amounts to an average of less than four sites in each of the 23 counties/regions represented. So if you want to use this to plan a trip, rather than take it with you, then its really good and will get you to some really interesting off-the-beaten-track places (and I do intend to try some of them out), but much less use as something you carry around in your panniers or ... Lonely Planet - great for maps and local transport but thats about all! As any experienced traveller will tell you, the minute any restaurant, cafe or hotel gets it name in LP then its prices will double and the standards will half! I also agree with some of the other comments here, why do they try so hard to be cool and why do they tell us what we should and shouldnt do? An OK book but now and then leave it in your backpack and be adventurous.

This guide book is the best I've read. The advice was invaluable and I trusted the recommendations, especially when it came to accommodation. It very quickly became my travelling companion and I followed its advice as much as I could. Don't leave home without it!

One of the best birthday presents I've ever received.... It's not a book to replace individual lonely planet guides, but is a brilliant way to chase away winter blues, or alternatively, if you're thinking about going away somewhere, to have a brief idea of the time to go. I much prefer leafing through a beautiful book like this rather than researching "when to go" on websites. It is the "big picture" of a country rather than east/west coast specific, but that's all you want or need if you're planning a fantasy trip, or if you're just looking for some ideas. I've got the hardbook version which I think is better than the paperback one as it somehow makes it more "special" (without sounding naff I hope). ... Read More:

This book covers Bangkok and the Centre and East (Issan) side of Northern Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Yunnan in China. This is a very good loop for travelers who are going to be doing this circuit around Southeast Asia. The book is too condensed for my liking though. The book is small and lightweight (about 1/2 size of the Thailand guide book) but with that compromises have had to be made. It therefore seems to be similar in content to the Southeast Asia guidebook for the areas it covers. I would have preferred the book to be the size of the larger guides and covered more detail. The are also some quirks with the book. Although the sections (countries) have a similar look and feel there are major information ... Read More:
