Like so many people in the country I was blown away by the success of the recent Olympics in Beijing, but especially by the amazing performances of the GB cycling team. So when i noticed "Heroes, Villains & Velodromes" on the shelf of my local book shop I thought I'd give it a try. I wasn't sure what to expect really but what i got was a lively, entertaining and extremely well written read about the revolution in british cycling and Hoy's part in it over the last ten years. As Moore says in his comments it's not nessecarily a story just about Chris Hoy but he is the principal character and 'star of the show'
Hoy comes across a phenomenal athlete, ferocious competitor but also a genuinely nice guy who's dedicates hiimself completely ... Read More:

This is a great well of knowledge of the sources that helped inspire many of the Discworld characters, motifs and situations. It's really wonderful to have so much secondary information on the series in one book, an encyclopedia-esque store of the kind of cultural tidbits that are fascinating in their own right as well as in relation to to Discworld. However the writing style, while clear, is a bit dull and sometimes the line between human mythology and its Discworld counterpart is not exactly clear all the time, at least to me. I was also disappointed by a reference made to the Robin of Sherwood TV series in which the author dismisses a great reimagining of the classic folktale with some pedantic complaints about its apparently archaic use of the Herne the Hunted ... How does he do it? In his 10th Merrily Watkins mystery, author Phil Rickman has written another terrific story - this time involving a grisly murder, an archaeological dig, a best-selling atheist living in Merrily's parish under an assumed name, and endless rain that swells the river and threatens to inundate the village.

DI Frannie Bliss plays a prominent role in this tale, and other characters from earlier novels make an appearance in To Dream of the Dead - including Lucy Devenish - mentor to Merrily's teenage daughter Jane. And that despite the fact that Lucy is dead, and has been for quite some time.

I love this book, and look forward to Rickman's next Merrily Watkins adventure.

I've loved 44 scotland street more than any other McCallSmith books but ... After reading that latest/last volume I wondered whether McCallSmith had really written it. Yes, it has some the spirit of the previous books, yet it is totally different. Less witty, less ... something. This one definetly doesn't have it.
There is a huge gap between that volume and the previous (or have I missed something?) and the characters are totally out of character. They're becoming heavy and unreal, which is rather weird for a McCallSmith book.
Of course it is well written (hence the 3*), it still has some and some fantastics chapters (and some very long ones), but something's gone. Maybe it's me...
However I've discussed it with another fan of McCallSmith and she too tought ... Read More:

As the cliche goes: I sooo wish I'd had this book as a kid. Nearly everything inside could be found with 5 minutes determined google searching, but it is the lucidity and compiling that makes this book so compelling.

Somehow it makes you feel invigourated reading it - you feel that it is entirely possible to do all the things listed and be a swiss army man or stg.

The one weakness (if it has a weakness) that this book has is that it does have an ever so slightly condescending tone. However, given the tone of the many inferior versions (eg the 'How to be best at everything...' series - as if they are), this book is remarkably down to earth.

So, what are you waiting for? If you've got this far then you clearly spend too much time on t'internet rather ... Read More:

I bought this book on a whim, needing a pick me up on a cold and dreary weekend. I wasn't sure if Bushnell could deliver the goods, but this novel was genuinely enjoyable. She's created an interesting little story and filled it with a mix of likable and not so likable characters. While her insight into New York society seems slightly dated, in spite of the many new media references, her passion for the city shines through as she manages to capture both its glorious history and the never-ending struggle for success.

This book won't put any demands on you as a reader, but it will help to while away a few hours.
