This book was recommended as pre-course reading for the LLB. I'd already got the Glanville Williams one, which would have been fine if I was studying law in 1850, but this is SO much more useful in every respect. It's a manual of 'how to do everything' with plenty of substance and academic weight but written so that anyone can make sense of it.

The last sea-faring trilogy I read was William Golding's To The Ends Of The Earth (made up of Rites of Passage, Close Quarters and Fire Down Below). Ok, it's the only sea-faring trilogy I've read but I really enjoyed it. Sacred Hunger, which shared the Booker Prize in 1992 with Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient (what a year!), is another fantastic maritime narrative so I had high hopes for the first instalment of Amitav Ghosh's projected trilogy; would I be left in the doldrums or with wind in my sails?

The setting is an interesting one: the Indian subcontinent in the 1830's finds the British East India Company exerting their influence through the trade in opium. Ghosh shows us the effects of this trade immediately through Deeti ... Read More:

Well, it is art and it is very hard to someone to explain the reason why he's an artist don't you think?

"Why" was the question several of my colleges at work asked me when I received this little book from Amazon this morning. First they've asked me why does he do it and then, why did I bought it. To the first question I answered that Slinkachu is an artist and this is his art. For the second question I didn't need to answer anything. Just passed the book to their hands and let them see for themselves.

I've been following Slinkachu work on the Internet for some time now and when I knew this book was on sale, I just had to bought it.

I have read many books and all of Marian Keyes and is one of the worst books i have ever read! It took me 4 and a half weeks to read and couldn't wait to finish it so I could a better book! It was far to long but u never get to know any of the characters properly, starts off funny and then gets a bit depressing. Very dissapointed!

As I find this period of British history fascinating I thought I'd give Sword song a try, but I must admit defeat - I have abandoned reading it after ony 73 pages. Yes, it has period feel, yes, the research is there - but it fails to hold me. I find the personalities less than gripping, and the story doesn't really flow for me. Obviously a matter of taste as the author is very popular!
I would recommend the books by Alfred Duggan from the same period - the same gritty imperfect heroes, but a style I much prefer.

After the previous Roy Grace novel ( not dead enough ) leaving me disappointed, this has put the series back on track. The story is well thought out and what a last line! I cant wait for the next novel

As an admirer of Philip Norman's brilliant Beatles' book, Shout, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this and I have not been disappointed. This portrait of John moved me to tears. It made me see in a way no book has ever done before just how much the tragedies of his childhood affected his later life. I can't believe Yoko thinks this book has been "mean" to John. He emerges from it not just as a genius but a great - and real - human being.
