Books : The Perfect Christmas
The look of this book and the premise behind (and the other reviews!) convinced me to buy it. And I am (frankly) a little disappointed. If this was the first Christmas that you were putting together then I can see the appeal, but I can't say that it's really inspired me. Many of the suggestions are, quite honestly, a little obvious. Maybe that is what this book is about, and I've missed the point - I wanted pages of gorgeousness sprinkled with lots of ideas for Christmas. Anthea has included numerous projects, very few of which inspire me (putting your old glittery brooches on the Christmas tree when you've run out of decorations). Her recipes aren't up to patch of someone like Nigella Lawson (and neither would I expect them to be), and ... Read More:

Books : The Northern Clemency
This huge, sprawling novel has left me breathless. Quite an amazing read. The simple, economical style leads you through this cast of characters with such clarity and such honesty that I was very sorry to finish the book and have to try to finding something to fill its place.

A quite stunning piece of story telling, unlike anything I've read before and a stand out book that, should there be justice, deservedly win the Man Booker.

Don't let the the length and the 'literary' label put you off. Give this book a go and let yourself be immersed by a writer who can truly hook you into fiction.

Books : Always with You
I'm afraid that I don't agree with the earlier reviewers. I, for one, am not happy to see yet another book from Gloria about her daughter. It appears that this is Gloria's new career, writing books about her dead daughter. I might be less harsh if I knew that all the proceeds of these books was being donated to charity.

Books : The Celeb Diaries: The Sensational Inside Story of the Celebrity Decade
This book is a major, major disappointment. Obviously edited backwards from what Frith considers the key issues from today's perspective and not a real diary at all, this is a collection of pointless anecdotes and tedious magazine politics told in a pre-school fashion.

He never misses an opportunity to tell us what a great guy/boss/boyfriend/employee/editor he is. Urgh!

Avoid like the plague.

88.Gordon Ramsay's Healthy Appetite by: Gordon Ramsay

Books : Gordon Ramsay's Healthy Appetite
Not a great book.

Note the apostophe in the title - this is Gordon Ramsey branded, but he only wrote the intro. The recepies are by his trusty side-kick Sarge.

The recepies themselves are all pretty simple, basic stuff - not what you would hope (or expect) from Gordon Ramsey.

Save your money and spend it elsewhere!

89.The Gypsy Morph (Genesis of Shannara) by: Terry Brooks

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Gypsy Morph (Genesis of Shannara)
"The Gypsy Morph" epitomises what Terry Brooks has consistently done with his last few Shannara series' - they always end poorly, and do not match up to the promise they showed in the earlier books.

The Gypsy Morph is just frightfully dull. We never genuinely get the feeling that this is the end of the world we're dealing with here, and there isn't a single action sequence in the book with any real drive or sense of drama. Brooks has forgotten how to write a good battle scene - the last good ones he wrote were in "First King of Shannara", which was published twelve years ago. These days, he thinks he can write a battle which is three pages long and described only in passing detail and get away with it. Well, he can't.

He also introduces ... Read More:

I've just finished reading this - a book I devoured almost without putting it down. That 112 year old can really write!

Henry Allingham is a fascinating character - the only man alive who saw the Grand Fleet steaming towards Jutland, and also the last of those who fought in the first air war in history. Mr. Allingham has a dry, self-deprecating style which is highly engaging. I was drawn into his autobiographical tale, almost as if he had been talking to me directly.

The narrative of this remarkable 112 year old is interspersed with short passages of historical scene-setting, filling in the background to Henry's story. Consequently they add rather than detract from the narrative.

The whole book is delightful - a personal narrative ... Read More:
