I found this book hugely entertaining, informative and written in a style that took me back to those heady days reading the Topper and Victor. Great stuff Neil.

Martin Pugh has amassed a great deal of information about the attitudes and social mores of the ordinary people throughout Britain in the Twenties and Thirties and made it accessible and even enjoyable. The 'celebrities' such as the Duff-Coopers and the Mountbattens are there, but the strength of the book lies in the insights it gives into the lives of ordinary people going about their work and leisure. There is rigour as references are scrupulously given, but there is also an easy and friendly style which makes the 400 plus pages pass quite quickly.

Peter Godwin certainly has a story to tell. It's a story of an idyllic, if unusual childhood, a disrupted but eventually immensely successful education, military service and then two careers, one in law, planned but aborted, and then one in journalism, discovered almost by default. Listed like this these elements might sound just a bit mundane, perhaps not the subject of memoir. When one adds, however, the location, Rhodesia becoming Zimbabwe, the result is a deeply moving, in places deeply sad, as well as quite disturbing account of a life lived thus far. Mukiwa, by the way, is Shona for white man.

The setting for Peter Godwin's early years was a middle class, professional and, crucially, liberal family living in eastern Rhodesia, ... Read More:

Evan Wright embeds with the lightly-equipped (and Humvee mounted) First Recon whose job is to lead the US invasion to Baghdad. The men are the usual mixture of saints and sinners (often at the same time) for whom the USMC feels a vocation. They are shooting civilians one moment and trying to save them the next. Wright is excellent at sketching the boredom of soldiering, the sudden jag of combat, and the long recovery from the combat high. If there is a villain in the piece of non-judgemental reporting it is the officers a number of whom (disguised by nicknames)are roundly criticised by the men and by the author. First Recon is an elite formation and its performance makes for an interesting contrast with "Ambush Alley".

I had previously found the Tudor age rather complicated and a little vague due to the complexed nature of Henry VIII's numerous wives and children.I started to read this book and became absorbed in the intrigue of this period of Tudor England. It provides in depth details of Henry's children and the profound effect their individual lives would have on the political and social developments of the Kingdoms they ruled, be it long or short. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Tudor period and which leads to arguably the greatest sovereign in Elizabeth I that this country has seen.

I do not know how Americans view Islam but as an Englishman/European it seems to me that Said's views are so much poppycock. To make a couple of points in a limited space.

Of course we have a stereotypical view of Islam just as Islam has a stereotypical view of us - and these views are largely hostile .So what? For century after century Islam was an enormous threat to what might loosely be called Christendom. It shaped every aspect of European history and was directly responsible for Europes colonial empires. Up till around 1750 they were a dangerous direct competitor to our interests.Gibbon writing in the 1780s was the first to think that the danger had passed .On a local scale the threat lasted even longer - Barbary pirates ravaged the coast of England ... The result of nearly twenty years' research, this book is a remarkable, comprehensive tour de force of the arcane, superbly illustrated with colour and black-and-white plates, some of which have not been seen outside secret societies.
As Jonathan Black points out in his introduction, while modern pundits tend to discredit the Mystery schools, "this book will show that throughout history an astonishing number of famous people have secretly cultivated the esoteric philosophy and mystical states taught in the secret societies". He cites, for example, Bach, Beethoven, Cervantes, Charlemagne, Dante, Goethe, Joan of Arc, Kepler, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Milton, Mozart, Napoleon, Newton, Shakespeare, Voltaire, and George Washington, all of whom held beliefs and who adopted ...
