[[ASIN:0330455737 The Circuit: An Ex-SAS Soldier's True Account of One of the Most Powerful and Secretive Industries Spawned by the War on Terror]
A fascinating insight into the job of a 'Close Protection' operative.Bob Shepherd pulls no punches with his opinions about his fellow countrymen(and non fellow countrymen)who share the same profession, especially if they're not trained to his standard, which as you might guess after 23 years serving with 'The Regiment' are understandably high.If you're looking for a book crammed with boys own stories about damsels in distress and guns and explosions in true gruesome detail, then this definately is NOT the book for you. This is a story about a true professional in every sense of the word, who makes ... EH Carr was a great thinker, and in this series of lectures published in What Is History he tackles deep philosophical questions with a wit and intelligent investigation that is difficult to dislike. A bit wordy in places, and a bit mind boggling in others, What Is History is still thought provoking and interesting, just as it should be.

What would you do if your government made a law that was completely immoral? It required you to act in an immoral way? This is not just a theoretical question, it has happened - consider Nazi Germany. So what would you do? Follow the law because it is what the law says and as citizens we are under a duty to follow the law? Refuse to follow the law because it is immoral (and risk prison/execution)? What if everybody refused to follow laws they didn't like? Wouldn't that result in anarchy? Would anarchy be so much better or maybe it would be even worse? Maybe if the law was immoral enough you would start a revoltion?
If you think about questions like this, Hobbes' Leviathan is the beginning of the modern consideration of this question. You may ... Read More:

My Mum was given this book as a gift a couple of years ago and now after we have both read it we agreed that if this had been the first book by Philippa Gregory we had come across we would not have bothered reading any more. The central characters we all unlikeable - though Lord Hugh at least seemed to be a fairly reliable depiction of a landed lord at the time. The blurb on the back of the book no way gives an accurate idea of what you can expect inside the covers. I found the wax dolls creepy and something I was uncomfortable reading. The only reason this book has been given one star is that I am unable to give it less.

One small example of the problems with Figes' book, small but typical : on pages 631-632 we are treated with the horrendous shooting of Bim-Bom, the clown who dared mock the bolsheviks, at the hands of the Cheka bursting onto the circus in the middle of the comedian's act.

Except that a small amount of research would have made Figes aware that Bim-Bom was not a single clown but a duet, and that no such assassination took place : on the contrary the founder of this famous duet ("Bim" real name Ivan Semenovich Radunskim) died in 1955 after a long career.

But hey ! Why let facts get in the way of a good scene ?

The research, understanding & in depth knowledge is amazing. To genuinely understand & cram so much into one paperback deserves so much more than the 2 stars I have given.

Unfortunately the book is unreadable - I gave up after 100 or so pages (and Im sorry cos I know Ive missed out on so much knowledge). Sentences are up to half a page long, convoluted, strewn with double negatives. Paragraphs take up more than a page. Its impossible to read without getting lost or trying to double read every section.

Bottom line: Author is brilliant without question. Publisher must and should realise that brilliance is nothing without communication - and this book doesnt communicate.

The introduction to this book sets the scene of the wartime kitchen and beyond during rationing, and continues with reproductions of wartime leaflets. For content I would have given this book five stars but marked it down by one since I found some of the reproductions rather difficult to read due to poor quality - even with my super new reading glasses.

This book is not just a nostalgic look at the past but contains valuable nutritional advice which is as applicable today with the range of foods available to us as it was then.

Given the current economic climate and the need for us all to reduce food and energy waste, there are many useful tips to pick up from this book. Filling, wholesome food and a balanced diet is possible with good planning, ... Read More:

This is one of the most accessible introductions to western philosophy that I've come across. There are lucid accounts of 27 classic works of philosophy from Plato's Republic to John Rawl's A Theory of Justice. This 3rd edition(2006) includes three new chapters on Friedrich Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil, Bertrand Russell's The Problems of Philosophy and Jean-Paul Sartre's Existentialism and Humanism. At the end of each short chapter there's a glossary and suggestions for further reading.
Any newcomer to philosophy could do no better than get hold of a copy of this marvellous and beautifully written book.

I visited Morocco in Spring this year and found that the level of detail in the Rough Guide to Morocco was impressive. The guide is straight forward and easy to use and was full of details I wouldn't have even thought of expecting from a guide book, but definitly appreciated reading. Packed with every detail from which airlines fly into Morocco, to examples of traditional Moroccan myths, it was the perfect companion for our trip! It gave us practical details, which were accurate and helpful and at the same time gave us an insight into the complex culture. I started using Rough Guides with a trip to Stockholm last December and now I'm hooked!

Hello. My name is Gary Shane McGill - On Liberty was required reading while I was at Salisbury University in Maryland for my Political Ideology classes. Mill is a famous nineteenth century Liberal thinker, although possibly not as quite as renown as Karl Marx to the common man outside of Political Science circles, but an important Liberal theorist writer just the same.

The flow of the writing style that Mill uses is not easy to read in comparison to Karl Marx. When I read this book at university I found that many of my fellow students found it a difficult read, but once you have read On Liberty once or twice it gets easier to understand, plus what Mill has to say I would recommend discussed in a group setting to fully appreciate the philosophy.
