I am from Croatia, a republic of former Yugoslavia. I was engaged in a struggle for a democracy against communist regime in 1980s. The communist party argued that what we had as "socialism", and in particular "self-management" is the best form of democracy. In reality, we understand that it is not true.

David Held's book "Models of Democracy" was translated into Slovenian, one of south-Slavic languages, in a year of the fall of Berlin wall, Jun 1989. Few years later, it was published in Croatian also, with a special preface of D. Held personally.

The book was an excellent reference for all of us, who struggled for democracy, to understand what we are standing for. It is still important today, for we are still at the beginning ... Read More:

I was looking forward to reading this book as I have served with a couple of lads from both 2 & 3 Para who fought in the Falklands and have worked with many other Paras in more recent years.
The book started off pretty dull about his life at school but soon got on track once he decided to join the Army, the story of life in the Army, his trip down south and what happened on his return was excellent, but then it went back to being dull again, why he chose to write about his trip to Belize is beyond me and didnt add anything to the book, I nearly stopped reading there, but then it picked up again at the end.
His attitude towards the rest of the Army is now very dated, and although there is still inter Regiment rivalry the whole whole way ... Read More:

like the others i saw Bear on tv and thought heres someone with a good sense of humour and would make a brilliant uncle with his adventure stories, this book relates to much more than climbing Everest it could be paralleled to lifes struggles and your own personal Everest, what i took from it is that if you have the tenacity, determination and the burning desire to conquer something thats seems insurmountable it can be done, i liked Bears references to his faith (i am of no religion) but it struck me that if you have a belief it certainly will help get you through, good luck to him, this book left me wanting more Uncle Bears tales!!

By gum is this man angry. I took six months to read this book last year (nad yes it was worth it). Each time I opened it I sunk slightly further into depression as I understood more of the evil man does to man in the name of an ideal, or imperial self-interest, or tribal loyalty, or religious fealty, or a sense of post-colonial national inferiority.

I would recommend that anyone who expresses half an interest in what motivates bright young men (usually) with a future before them to fly aircraft into tall buildings to read this book.

It will depress you. It will enlighten you.

Robert Fisk, of all western journalists, has the moral authority to carry off a book like this. He has lived through most of the post-World War II horrors ... Read More:

The poetry of soldiers of the First World War.

Supposedly the War to end ALL Wars, it was a bloody, brutal and harrowing campaign. It wasn't over by Christmas as many had speculated and lasted four long years and it marked the emergence of a new type of warfare.

The poetry in this anthology covers those four years of war, from the eager young men joining up to fight the enemy on foreign soil, to the maimed returning home and, of course, those who never returned at all.

The poems are deeply moving, especially those of the men stuck in the trenches, knee deep in mud with nothing to listen to but the sound of shells exploding outside and nothing to see but their friends injured and killed. Some of the poems were written by men who never returned, ... Read More:

This is a must for history students and buffs alike. In fact is is a great read full stop! Many books of this genre are dry but Tacitus takes you there and his commentary is both concise, and at times caustic and witty.

This is not an easy book to read nor understand. It takes several readings. A large investment in time will allow the reader to understand Clausewitz's system and the remarkable way that it stills aides in understanding the phenomenon of war. The text is adorned with many historical examples. Continuously emphasizing that war is 'a continuity of policy by other means. He has defined perfectly the theory of war, its tactical and strategic purposes. A must for an military or political leader.

Truly the worst holocaust testimony ever written. So many mistakes throughout the whole text. Two examples of which were when Mr Muller mentions the camp orchestra in Birkenau, there was none.He also quotes that Kramer was in Birkenau and had came from Auschwitz 2.Both are one and the same place But important errors like these were repeated in every chapter and the worry for me is that Holocaust deniers may pick up on these simple blunders.Mr Mullers over use of adjectives and repetition of statements at times resulted in the book bordering on being boring. It read more like a students written essay who wasnt fully informed ,rather than an actual Holocaust survivors memoirs.Ive read many more imformative Holocaust testimonies and even Mr Muller must have been disappointed with the finished article.I tend to believe ...
