Loved this! A great reference to parts of London we see every day, but ignore so easily.

One of the buildings I walk past going to work every day is in here, and I look at it now, and soak in the History.

This is a great little book, if you love London and its history, you will really enjoy Derelict London.

Thucydides follows self-consciously on from Herodotus as a 'historian' but takes a very different tack. Partly this is due to their place in history: Herodotus was the product of a triumphant Athens leading the mediterannean world after shockingly defeating the huge Persian invasion of Greece, while Thucydides lives through the decline of Athens from her high point under Pericles through to her final defeat under Sparta. A critic of Athenian democracy and the rise of the demagogues, Thucydides is also a participant in the 37 years long war, as strategos (General) who was defeated at Amphipolis and exiled from Athens. What is amazing is his ability to stay detached and analytical, despite his personal involvement in events.

This book is great! Having just flipped through it, you can see right away that the pictures inside are big and easy to see the detail. It also gives a little background to the different images used in a Japanese Tattoo. For example, it tells you what the dragon symbolises and where it originated from in the tattoo format.
I would recommend this book for any tattoo enthusiast.

This book was interesting from the depth of research about the period he was writing about would almost be a 5/5.

Unfortunately for me, the book was let down by its story line. The characters were poorly developed, at times aspect of the story line was fantastical, and bore minimal regard to realitiy and a lack of depth. A little staid the story is 3/5.

It didn't captivate. A shame, as it was set in an intersting time, with lots to play with :(

A border line 4/5 only for the historical aspects.

It's a big read. I only wish these long-distance authors would try to remember most of us are just human. We need maps, diagrams, periodic summaries, Who's Who reminders, especially with the russian names. I switched off early and just went with the flow. It's a decent chronology but I found it devoid of any depth of explanation of the politics, the philosophical justification or the emotional detail to make it come to life. The story of course is quite horrific, on a scale that makes you despair. If I had read this when I was fifteen, it would have soured my view of the world and its' 'leaders' for ever. It puts all the dolls house euro bickering that we have to put up with into perspective. Stalin's world with its' crooks and murderous cronies, ... Read More:

Jane Mulvagh's book should be called The Lygons to be more accurate. She offers only tantalising glimpses into the house itself, using suspiciously round dimensions to describe the rooms, an implausibly high drawing room ceiling and throws away a comment about 60 bedrooms in her descriptions. If you are looking for a history of Madresfield you'd be better to read 'The Last Country Houses' or the Country Life articles, the latter of which don't make a mention in her bibliography. Her links from the brief descriptions of the house to the various family members are facile and 2 dimensional.

However as a history of the Lygon's the book is very good. It makes fascinating reading, particularly on the 20th century Lygons and offers glimpses to a very different ... Read More:
