I have always been fascinated by Africa. My parents met there as vso volunteers in the 70s and that was how the author first experienced Africa. My parents talked often about their time there but they had such mixed views - love and hate. I bought this because of review and knew I was travelling to Australia so had time to read it. I have not been disappointed. It is passionately written yet highly informed. Above all it makes sense of something I never quite understood. It will be my parents' Christmas present! I must now go to Africa.

lent this book to my daughter before I read it by which time I had seen the film. The film was moving and believeable - up to a point. Why his parents took so little interest in Bruno's coming and goings and why the maid takes little interest in his whereabouts is a plot device. Obviously the subject matter is harrowing and I cried at the film but not when reading the book which I found a bit of a letdown. Very simply written and perhaps more suitable for younger readers.

The research, understanding & in depth knowledge is amazing. To genuinely understand & cram so much into one paperback deserves so much more than the 2 stars I have given.

Unfortunately the book is unreadable - I gave up after 100 or so pages (and Im sorry cos I know Ive missed out on so much knowledge). Sentences are up to half a page long, convoluted, strewn with double negatives. Paragraphs take up more than a page. Its impossible to read without getting lost or trying to double read every section.

Bottom line: Author is brilliant without question. Publisher must and should realise that brilliance is nothing without communication - and this book doesnt communicate.

I purchased this book as I am hoping to start a degree in photography in September 2005 and wanted to start "reading around" my subject. Although I haven't read this entire book, it is all ready proving its worth as the chapters' reference many other critical and theoretical works on photography that I have now started reading to widen my knowledge. It seems then that this book is ideal for dipping in and out of every now and then in order to push intriguing minds into other areas of the subject of photography. Therefore I'm sure it will prove a valuable addition to my bookshelf for my remaining years as a photography student.

WIth the plethora of stuff coming out now from grunts (sorry sniper one) throught to Harrier pilots, I have read many of these books and perhaps I have become overloaded.

I cannot enthuse over this book and whilst it is without doubt accurate, I did not find that it flowed as a good read. I must admit judging by the rave reviews from many readers, there are many who feel that it is better than I did.

Towards the end, I was looking to see how many pages were left, which is always a tell-tale sign for me that it is not that good. Well done to the AAC, I am glad that the army got the Apache rather than the REMFS of the RAF: sadly whilst I admire the AAC quite a bit and they pulled me out of a hole once, I can only give this read three ... If you want to understand the holocaust, how and why it happened, then you need to read If This Is A Man. Levi dispenses with his emotional responses and describes what happened with a frightening detachment. Through his eyes, Levi shows us how the Nazi machine sought to rob their victims of all vestiges of their humanity and thereby justify their treatment of the camp victims. This in turn led to the horrible events that we all know so well. Levi, however, does not just aim to show us the horror of the events, but understand them. Thus, amongst the debasement of life in the camps, we see how necessary it becomes to bathe with dirty water - not to clean yourself, but to regain fragments of your own humanity. This book is essential if we are to understand why the holocaust ... Read More:

This book is indeed fantastic to read, it is well researched and gives a slightly more wholesome view of what our boys are up against. My only criticism, not meaning to take anything away from the author, is that the book is not written as if a soldier is talking, but rather from a third person perspective, which is good but not my personal choice (after reading sniper one). This by no means takes away from the value of the book and its a very good read, for anyone who wants a bit of a clue as to what's really going on in afghanistan.

This book provides undergraduates, particularly first year students in human geography a comprehensive grounding into the key debates within human geography. It is also a good text for any students wishing to re-familiarising with a variety of geographical issues. This book is easy to understand, but never simplistic. It also excellent case study material and references for further reading. A near essential book for any human geographers.
