Books : The Way of Tea: The Sublime Art of Oriental Tea Drinking
Apart from Master Lam questioning the merits of organic tea production, I can't really fault this book as an excellent introduction to "tea". From the history of its discovery and commercial cultivation to details of the art of tea making, little is excluded.

Yes, of course there will be something missing, but as a starting point for those who are interested in a more refined cup of tea without milk (i.e. progressing beyond PG Tips - a "red" tea, by the way! - or Earl Grey) it is superb.

Books : The Sex Life of Food
'The Sex Life of Food' seemed like an incredibly intriguing title for a book, which is what led me to pick up this excellent book.It wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it didn't disappoint.

The book explores the complex relationship between food, sex, sensuality, our history and who we are, covering all kinds of topics, such as:
whether certain foods are considered male or female;
aphrodisiacs; restaurant decor; comfort foods; food symbolism in fairy tales; the part food has played in politics and an excellent (and intelligently explored) chapter on cannabalism.

The book does jump around a little which may annoy some readers and its scope might be considered ambitious, but if you abandon youself and go ... Read More:

This is perhaps not quite the definitive book the subject of absinthe but almost certainally the most accessable, enjoyable and visual. The images throughout are ecceptional in the diversity ranging from glorified, idiealistic portraits by Van Gogh, to anti-Absinthe propaganda courtesy of the Fench Goverment. This book is throughly researched and provides an insighful backdrop the the romantised world of 'absinthe-culture'. Not only is the research extensive and the images captivating, there are also mini-biographies and absinthe-celebrating poems the fasciniating and often tragic charactors of Verlaine, Rimbaud, Wilde and Baudelaire. Overall the book is a pleasure, easy to absorb and easy to find oneself captured in.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I am very interested in Alice Waters' and Chez Panisse's philosophy about food. The author has done thorough research on the book, albeit some parts of the book seemed repetitive, perhaps owing to the repetitive occurences within the development of the restaurant itself. Overall, if you are interested in the restaurant business and in fresh food/slow food movement, read it!

What a fantastic book!

In the Devil's Garden is divided into eight sections (one for each of the seven deadly sins plus one for luck!)Part travelogue, part gourmet treat, part history book, this book ticks so many boxes you won't be disappointed.

The book is incredibly well researched and is written in a highly entertaining, often humourous way. There were parts where I was almost crying with laughter....the part where Allen was rubbed down with a guinea pig was particualrly amusing (if you want to know why, you'll have to read the book!) I particualrly liked the idea of Louis XIV's courtiers having a 'hissy fit' when chocolate was introduced to France. I can picture it really clearly!

A great book that you ... Read More:

60.The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals by: Michael Pollan
August 28, 2007
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
An elegantly and thoughtfully written book on the modern food industry that feeds us. Pollan demonstrates a refreshing openness, sharing how his journey through mass produced, organic, and hunter-gatherer food systems affects him without ever sinking into sentimentality - even when shooting a wild pig his insight into what it means to be a hunter is superb.

Without doubt one of the best books on food that I have ever read and one that will withstand the test of time, if for no other reason than the issues he covers of where our food comes from, how it is produced and what that might mean are as relevant today as they ever have been.
