Forget Stephen King, Lovecraft IS the true master of horror.

Ok, some stories may be just oniric ramblings like Celephais or Festival, but never has anyone scared me so much over so few pages and for every lemon of a story there are four peaches, and that is good trade off.

Even though Lovecraft draws on monsters and phantastical creatures to conduct his stories, it is more often than not the consequences and the implications of their existence rather than the creatures themselves that create the sense of fear when reading the stories.

And again, in contrast with Stephen King, a 400 page novel cannot be scary nearly by definition. But condense it all on 12 and simply do not read them before switching off ... Read More:

A fantastic novel! 'The Monk' is a classic that captures the attention of the reader from the outset. Set in Spain in follows the torment of a Capuchin monk as he falls into a spiral of deceit and despair. It also follows the struggles of Lorenzo as he tries to save his sisters life from the vengence of her convent.

This is a riveting tale of intrigue, incest, murder and blasphey told in a wonderfully flowing style that is so easy to read that you can't put it down. The two separate story lines come together beautifully-it's the best book i've ever read!

For anyone who doesn't know Hellboy - imagine Sam Spade as a demon superhero investigating supernatural threats H.P. Lovecraft might have written and you're somewhere close.

Admittedly this is not the best of the Hellboy stories - Mike Mignola admits in an afterword that he lost control of the plot (the comic originally appeared monthly) - and if I were only marking the story I'd probably have wanted to give it 3.5 stars. Nonetheless, it is definitely worth reading with the trademark Hellboy mix of humour, action and horror, and the noir art as ever is wonderful (pushing it from 3.5 to a deserved 4).

A word of warning: although this is marked as vol.2 of the Hellboy series, there are stories in vol.3 'The Chained Coffin and Others' ... Read More:

So far I am only on book 5 in the series but I have to say that this is the best so far.
I was so absorbed with the story within the story that I was devastated (metaphorically) when it was over and it went back to the main story.
Kings imagination is incredible and the way he has brough characters in from his other books is amazing, its even more epic in scope than I realised when I started the series and leads me to wonder if this was his plan all along to create and complete masterpiece interwoven with many of his other books.
A fully enjoyable read

Having read all of Wheatley's books in my youth (I am now 64)and loved them all, this one is THE best.
I believe that it was written in the 1930's so the style is a little different from modern books but the story is excellent and has stood the test of time.
Wheatley researched deeply into all things esoteric and always gave a warning in his forword to his books on black magic, 'not to get involved'.
Good advice, I think, as if you read this book, you will see what he means.
Read it, I know you will love it. Also, 'To the Devil a Daughter' by him is another excellent read in the same genre.

After the excitement and the dramatic twists of The Trials of Death, I instantly grabbed the sixth instalment of the saga to see what happened.
Trials of Death was the most interesting book out of the first five and had the most dramatic of endings to it and it was a slight shame to see Shan change his writing style for the opening couple of chapters.

As with Lord Loss, Shan has chosen to write very brief sentences, with no real flow and excitement and was a disappointment considering the situation which was at stake and set a negative tone for the rest of the novel, which took a long while to get back into.

As Darren makes company with the wolves, the author breaks up the excitement from the previous book and sets a gentler ... Read More:

A collection of short stories, that can be dipped in and out of. None are particularly long, so there is no need to put aside long periods to really get into it. The stories all seemed a little bit quaint to me, and not that dissimilar. The main characters tend to be middle-aged/aging bachelors, either academics or clergymen, which would be fairly unusual in modern fiction. I cannot say I found any of them particularly chilling, but I enjoyed reading them nonetheless.
