I have not read any James Herbert for some years and was quite frankly a little disappointed by this book. My reference point for this opinion is the towering piece of work by Stephen King - The Shining (a haunted house story). I found that as I read the book I had no real interest in the outcome. Spooks and mediums are for the devoted only!

This is a nicely plotted, beautifully presented and superbly illustrated vampire story. It has a neat scenario (inspired perhaps by Pitch Black which appeared 2 years earlier) and dispenses with all the niceties of the myths and treats vampires as the monsters they are. The only surprise is that although it is described as a graphic novel, it is a short story. Only 80 of its 104 pages are devoted to the story - the rest is filler: biographies and teasers from other books in the series. It will only take you half an hour to read it - but it will be an enjoyable half hour.

I bought this book quite a while ago because I was attracted to how many spells there are in it. The author has collected a diverse range of spells from various cultures and traditions. the spells are arranged by topic (each with an introduction) and there are a variety of different spells (though not all of them are practical or advisable).

There are other sections in the book to complement the collection of spells - the author's introduction is an interesting read and there are tables showing things such as colour associations. The book also has instructions for making the various oils mentioned in the spells and a list of possible ingredients including their latin names.

I have to admit I've never used a spell from ... Read More:

The second half of "Anita Blake Vampire Hunter: Guilty Pleasures" is where Laurell K. Hamilton stops trying to have the plot make sense.

While there are some interesting revelations, the fragmented story develops holes you could drive a SUV through, on the few occasions when it's not boring us silly with dysfunctional romance and vampire antics. Worst of all, the supposedly tough and knowledgeable Anita Blake becomes denser and more offensively obnoxious as the plot winds on... even to the point of forgetting who the murderer of master vampires is.

Angry with Phillip, Anita stomps out of the house -- and promptly bumps into a gang of Nikolaos' vampires overseeing a zombie-raising. Anita gives her help to the failing animator Zachary ... Read More:

This book deserves much more than 1 star, yes it was not as good as the first but it was still a great read although I have to agree the first book was like the movie and this felt like the opening of the TV Series with much of the storyline being concentrated on long episodes of a single scenario.

I feel the book could have been longe but this is maybe because I couldnt put it down. Can't wait for the third book. Bottom line this is by far one of the better Zombie books not far off World War Z.

H.P. Lovecraft is definitely one of the masters of the horror and gothic genre, and this omnibus contains some of his best work. Lovecraft must have had a very rich imagination indeed to have come up with these bizarre stories, but they work very well because Lovecraft always succeeds in walking the fine line between the totally absurd and the matter-of-fact reality. In the best stories there's always this nagging sense that 'it might be true'.

Reading these stories now and knowing that most of them were written in the 1920s makes you appreciate Lovecraft's complete mastery of the genre all the more.

Hannibal rising is Thomas Harris's latest installment in the life and times of Dr Hannibal Lecture. I'd read pretty bad reviews for this book, so while wanting to read it, my expectations were low. However, I actually found it to be an enjoyable read. certainly not a brilliant book, but all in all, not bad.

Hannibal rising is where it all begins for Hannibal. The story starts with his life in lithuania and having to flee the family home because of the second world war. horrid things befalls the family, especially hannibals beloved little sister Mischa, at the hands of some renegades. The whole family is wiped out and hannibal lives for several years in an orphange before being rescued by his aunt and uncle in paris. he subsequently becomes the youngest person ... Read More:
