This book is a "must read" for all science fiction / horror lovers, as you will be able to, as previously pointed out by other reviewers, trace the roots and themes of the genre back to its beginnings.

The depth of the book, however, lies in the poignant questions Shelley raises about scientific discovery and creation. These issues are as valid today as they were at the time and have been literary motifs ever since. Shelley's discussion of these themes makes this book a classic, and as such it should be understood.

If you are only familiar with Frankenstein's monster through film adaptations, you will discover an entirely different story, depicting the monster as a tragic and unloved hero, who turns into a brute following ... Read More:

I bought this book, Dark Prince, purely by accident in the shop in which I work in and I am glad I did. I am currently up to number nine in the series and absolutely cannot put them down! I was instantly engrossed in the plot and the developement of the relationship between the two main characters, Michail and Raven. I do feel however that this is not the best book in the series but still a very good read and a great introduction to the Carpathians saga. Each book does stand on its own but I would recommend reading this one first to fully emerse yourself in these brilliant books. An addicting and pleasurable read!

wow
this book is utterly brilliant - unbelievably well written - completely gripping and compulsively readable.
i will be honest that i didn't expect great things after the slightly disappointing Gunslinger, but this 2nd volume in King's Magnum Opus just takes the piss. it is a million miles better than number 1. and has made me a Dark Tower fan in seconds.
it is basically three doors and a story of drawing sidekicks out of them for the enigmatic hero Roland. These characters are amazing and colorful, the world's they come from and the scenes they get embroiled in are readable and gripping. King crafts characters better than most any other writer i know and this is no exception - the intros to every character are huge - and even minor characters ... Read More:

After the slightly slow first three books, these three really crank up the action!
They're true page-turners with plenty of twists and turns to keep you hooked.
And don't worry, the book just keep getting better!
These books see Darren enter the heart of the vampire world, battle for his life, and meet the vampires' arch-enemies!
Great books, I highly recommend them.

This is fan fiction and crime fiction so certain allowances must be made; a few clichés are to be expected, errors in narration can be forgiven and poor use of punctuation (particularly exclamation marks and ellipsis) can be put aside. These things are annoying, but Another Note made up for them with an excellent plot, an amazingly original new character and a conclusion worthy of the Death Note series.

I can't express how much I loved this book! I felt that Louis and Lestat were incredible characters. The emotion in this book is breathtaking and I am just about to start the next one. I will definitely be recommending this book to anyone who hasn't read it. 5 stars!

A lively, energetic, occasionally funny book, but this is TV-written-down, and 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' at that...

It's not exactly that there's much wrong with this book - it's an enjoyable, fairly absorbing read, perfect for keeping an eight-year-old quiet for a day - but it feels as if it's in the wrong medium. Derek Landy would be a great writer for a TV series('Buffy', 'Angel', 'Charmed', even 'Dr. Who'). He has a great ear for dialogue, especially the wisecrack, some great, vivid ideas, and an assured and compelling ability to sketch characters in only a few strokes. But sadly the book suffers from being a book: the special effects aren't as impressive as they should be, the fight sequences are long, uninventive and unimaginatively written, and there is nothing ... This volume has plenty in it! It's a fair bit larger than the first two, and packed with fantastic short stories that had previously been unavailable for ages. The title story, 'The Chained Coffin' gives a great look at more of Hellboys' origins and.....daddy??!!. Plus there's the fan favourite 'The Corpse' (nasty irish fairies) and 'Almost Colossus', which introduces Roger the homunculus before he joins the BPRD.

What I really love about this is how a lot of the stories are grounded in traditional folk and fairy tales from around the world, like the Russian witch Baba Yaga. There is something here most people will recognize. Plus its kinda nice to have a hero who's a bit of an anglophile! And to top it off there a neat art gallery section at the end! Marvelous! A great anthology ... Read More:

A magnificent collection indeed. Guy de Maupassant is the best storyteller of the 19th century France... This particular edition has the most entertaining short stories, each capable of delivering as strong a message on moral and profoundly non-societal ethics, as remarkably to-the-point images of an average French bourgeois or an average French peasant. The heroes are complex, decorated with their subjective and objectified environments: they fall in and out of love, abandon and adopt children...unpunished thieves, unfaithful servants, families enatngled in inheritance dispairs... His pen is so powerful that story after story lives succumb in theatrical precision so benign and materialistic, yet lively and at times, even lovable.

Being one of the best literary classics and appreciated ... Read More:
