I recently bought this book not knowing how useful it would be to me and discovered that I had hit the jackpot in finding the most informative and beautifully written recipe book I had come across. I do have a well stocked "library" full of recipe books by other well known food writers/cooks but none of them seemed to have this sort of quality that Marcella exudes - be it her style of writing and her passion of selecting ingrediants, preparation of ingrediants and how to go about reproducing the most authentic and exquisite dishes imaginable. Marcella writes from her heart and this can be seen when she mentions that whatever she cooks, if it doesn't turn out well - it doesn't go into the book. I can't seem to get over how ... Read More:

I am a regular listener of Arthur Schwartz's daily radio program and I anxiously awaited this book's publication. My family are from small towns in the Benevento area of Campagna and Arthur's recipes are the familiar food that I grew up with. He is the only person I know of who wrote about "Eggs in Purgatory". This was a regular Friday night supper in the days when meat was not allowed. All of these wonderful peasant dishes have now been "discovered" by people who are interested in healthy food. Our people ate them because they were inexpensive and I think Italians can make anything taste good! Bravo Arthur, you have done a great job!

I really like Ursula Ferrigno's style of cooking, and was really looking forward to this book after reading 'Truly Italian'. The recipes in this book look great, but there are a couple of typos (which are annoying but not that big a deal) and missing steps in some recipes (I've noticed two recipes so far where there are clearly some instructions missing). It should be said that you'll probably be able to overcome any mistakes and produce great food just as the recipe intended by using your intuition, but its disappointing that the book went into production in what feels like a half proof-read state.

The author seems to have studied quite well all that's related to Roman food, specially through Apicious's classic "The Art of Dining". Her updated recipes of ancient food are remarkable and inviting to follow. However, in several instances she gives totally wrong information about the origins of certains ingredientes and this certainly has a negative impact on the otherwise interesting general idea.
