My step father was an Italian restauranteur and had a copy of this same book in Italian throughout his career. He even had it rebound a few years back. During his life he ran a hotel in Rome and cooked for cardinals that came there from the vatican using recipes from the Silver spoon.

I was therefore thrilled when this came out in English and so far have bought 3 copies so that both my daughters have them for their homes. They use them daily. Not only is this the authentic cookery book for Italian food lovers it is amazingly economical, utilising seasonal fresh foods and not that many ingredients unlike so many newer recipes.

Risotto with carrots for example is fantastically creamy as the carrot is pureed. Highly ... Read More:

I thoroughly enjoyed this old fashioned, friendly, life affirming story. It all worked out in the end as it should if that isn't too much of a spoiler. I read it quickly and happily, immediately passing it to my mother who I knew would enjoy the puzzles, personalities and pictures painted in perfect prose.

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps.
We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see if you are a tourist", ... Read More:

This is an amazing item, I have tried many diferent techniques to learn Italian and this is by far the best. I really do encourage you to buy this you won't regret it. The voices used are really good as well, they saying everything clearly allowing you to understand quicker. The music is also an added bonus it allows the words to stick in your brain faster, and makes the experience alot more enjoyable. With this product its not a matter of having to use it, but you want to use it. Fantastic.

Gavin Menzies is neither an academic nor a lawyer, so his writing may occasionally be repetitive and he does not produce a watertight case, but do not let this put you off - in the core of this book is the fascinating theory that the Chinese donated their encyclopedia of knowledge to the Venetians as a gesture of magnamity and to prove to the world that the Chinese were the most advanced society in the world.
The world would be a different place today if the next emperor, a few years later, had not decided to cut China off from the world. Left with a repository of mechanical drawings explaining hydraulics, astronomy, weapons, manufacture etc, but no-one to explain the (Chinese) instructions, the handful of Italians with this gold dust then spent the next decades ... ..instead of having to pay through the nose for a copy in a Sienese bookshop. As ever, LP guides have the feeling of being written by someone who's actually been there, and the advice on San Gimignano (get there early or go in Winter) would have been worth it alone.

This is an excellent guide, especially if - like us - you were roaming over both regions during your holiday. Highly recommended

This is a wonderful book for all those who are passionate about Venice. Presented with great style, it is certainly up to the standard of Franceso's previous publications. But this is not just a book of traditional recipes and pretty photographs, many pages are devoted to the produce used in Venetian cooking and the history of various ingredients. There are pages describing 18th. century life in the palazzi of Venice and four pages devoted to the humble fork. This is a book that will transport you to the Grand Canal everytime you read it. Oh if only all trattoria and ristorante in Venice had a copy!
