What a quirky little book! I discovered it quite by accident but what a find. It basically tells you what to expect if you had the ability to travel back in time and found yourself a tourist in Ancient Rome. Based around AD200 but the author has borrowed from sources ranging over 300 years. It gives you an informative guide at every stage of your journey from getting there to eating out, where to stay, shopping and what sights every tourist ought to see and avoid! The book has lots of quotes from the likes of Cicero, Horace and Petronius but perhaps most amusing of all is the pages of useful phrases. The author has taken modern phrases and translated them into Latin - In hac tunica obesa videbor? This book should appeal to history buffs and ... Read More:

JG Link's book is quite simply the best guide book to take to Venice for a long weekend. Why? because there is such an embarrasment of riches to see, places to go and his guided walks organise and make sense of it all. Its like having your personal guide at hand whispering in your ear, pointing out the little details that you might otherwise miss.

Personally i would pack an illustrated guide like the Everyman too for colour and more traditional guidebook information.

This recipe book is a superb addition to anyone's culinary library - clearly not every recipe will suit every person but it is inconceivable that you would not find a significant number of useful recipes in here and even if you found just one nugget, then considering the price, it would be well worth it.

The variety of recipes in any of the 1000 series is simply staggering - to say you are stuck for choice is an understatement - but this particular one includes a great many vegetarian dishes too.

Ok, so there are no photographs but against that, the books don't cost a fortune either and they are compact.

You really cannot go wrong with any of these recipe books and when you consider they cost little more than ... Read More:

Carlo Levi was an anti-fascist in Mussolini's Italy(as well as a doctor)who was sentenced to a period of internal exile in the depths of rural southern Italy.
His portrait of the peasant world, with it's mixture of paganism, hunger and malaria is fantastic. He obviously empathises with the peasantry, but is never superior to them. Also, there is little or no self-pity("woe is me,a political exile").
This world vanished in the 1950's due to a combination of land reform, industrialisation and migration.Read Levi's account and wonder at a world that still existed in western Europe as recently as the late 1940s.

This text book was recommended to me by my history teacher and it has been very useful as i have covered the 2nd yr of the Italian Unit. All the important aspects of Mussolini's dictatorship are covered well in this book, particularly the economy which i feel can be a difficult area to understand.

I would definately recommend it as a course aid and a good basis for revision, it's well worth the money.

The short stories are entertaining, and they cover Italian writers from Machiavelli to Pirandello.

But the reason I bought this book is to study Italian. With Italian on the left and English on the right, this collection presents students with an easy way to build vocabulary and sample "literary" writing not found in regular textbooks.

Students should have at least an intermediary knowledge of Italian, in order to at least recognize the various past tenses employed.
