I have been vegetarian for over 25 years, and have run through the gamut of Rose Elliot, Diet for a Small Planet, Moosewood, Greens, Millennium, you name it. This book is in a different league. I received it as a gift, and it is now my favorite cookbook. The recipes are nutritious, flavorful and colorful. No pretensions or politics, just inspiring, clear and artfully simple recipes. This is a book that celebrates the beauty and flavor of vegetables, and even my kids like it!

I bought Rick Atkinson's "An Army at Dawn" (which follows the North African campaign from Operation Torch to Tunis) and, like many people, have been eagerly awaiting his newest book which covers Sicily and Italy. The book rumbles from one end of Italy to the other, following the campaign in detail, with clear maps and some excellent photos. It being primarily a book about the American fighting in Italy, non-American units are sidelined in that the level of detail devoted to them is far less. Atkinson's writing style is at times florid but he never fails to point out the brutality, the humanity and the sacrifice. I'm sorry to write this, but the recipes I've tried so far haven't worked. I love Anna del Conte's other books but it seems that the recipes in this one haven't been tested enough. Also there are not detailed enough so you have to be quite knowledgeable to succeed. The paintings are lovely though.

This book will serve students of modern Italy very well. Its judgements are reliable, and it has useful diagrams summarising key arguments. Perhaps it could have found room to say a bit more about the interaction between the monarchs and political leaders of the period (rarely positive for the national interest), the enduring disaffection in the south, and Mussolini's increasing lack of grip over events in the later years of his rule.

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps. We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see ... Read More:
