This is the kind of book that History of Art departments throw at you early on in their courses to instil the right respect and awe for the whole academic ritual. When I first saw this book at Birkbeck College (2003 History of Art MA) I was duly impressed and intimidated into thinking this was somehow a classic. In this work Baxandall is the exemplary academic, slowly building up a case from painstaking research and cleverly interpreted trivia. Particularly worthy of mention is the way the author brings the subject back to life by weaving quotes from Leone skilfully into the narrative. This book has the goods on the movies, how they were made and the source material that inspired them. However, and this is the only serious quibble with this book, one wonders if it is necessary to go into such detail regarding the plot outline particularly of Once Upon A Time In America which is repeated a couple of times through the book. This is a very well-written book about the life and times of Caravaggio, paying a considerable amount of attention towards even the smallest details. Although I did find this book paid more attention towards what happened in his life as opposed to his paintings, this is a biography and not an art book. Although the level of detail is astounding and anybody looking into Caravaggio should consider this book an absolute must.

Took this one with me to Venice. Did'nt really impress me. Would recommend getting a Lonelyplanet guide instead. But no real problems. Just like the lonelyplanet layout better.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this guide. It is easy to understand describing each town/region and giving suggestions of what to see. For both sun lover and culture seeker it is an essential piece of "holiday reading", giving detailed information, whilst being small and easy to carry with you. The island comes to life with the descriptions allowing the reader to get a "feel" for the island. I haven't yet been to Sicily but feel I know it well. When I do visit in the summer I know that I shall feel I know the island and the people intimately.
