If you only take one guidebook to Venice, make sure it's this one. We took the 1st Edition along on our first trip to Venice last year and it changed a good holiday into an amazing experience. There is a mouth-watering introductory section with guidance on what specialities to look out, very useful for a first timer. The main section reviews recommended bars, cafes and restaurants, usefully divided into geographical areas so you can easily plan an itinerary to fit in with sight-seeing. The enthusiasm of the authors for good food and for the city of Venice shines through on every page. Have just returned from a 5 day trip in Rome, using this little guide as one of the books used whilst there. It was very helpful, although it's quite tiny it was packed full of useful information, with good pictures, descriptions and advice. Although the maps only focus more on the centre of Rome they were adequate for our needs 4 days out of 5, as good as the map handed to us by our hotel.

I think some of the reviews here are missing the point - this is clearly written with the intention of being a fairly lightweight, but sensually stimulating memoir, not a deep investigation into Tuscan or Italian society.

When we moved to Italy someone bought us this book. What a gem! I lent it to my new-found Italian friend who speaks a little English. He made many comments in the margins saying 'This isn't true!' or 'This can't be right!'. We had a hilarious conversation where he admitted that everything was in fact true, or nearly. He just couldn't admit it! Very Italian!
