This is without doubt a must have book. The photographs are breathtaking and the narrative supports them well. This is a unique insight into some of the more private areas of the Vatican as well as some of the more well known. It is now a few years since its publication, but that doesnt detract from its impact. Go, read and be inspired!

Just come back from a 5 day trip in Rome, with this quide as one of the books used whilst there and found it quite inadequate. I also had a much smaller guide with me, by another publisher, which was of far more use packed with helpful pictures, maps and descriptive passages. The only helpful thing this LP guide had to offer was a larger map of the city which covered the via Appia area where the catacoombs are to the south of the city, but apart from that it was a waste of money.

Livy has a knack for breathing life into historical characters and is a natural storyteller in a way you rarely find among historians. I've seldom been entranced by historical writing in the way I was reading this book.

The book encompasses a big chunk of Roman history and Livy covers the ground at quite a pace so it can be a bit of a rollercoaster. As a crash course on Pre-imperial Roman History I doubt it can be beaten.

We've been coming to the Dolomites (to visit relatives) for years and have always found this book by some distance the most useful, with contact information for all the refuges, as well as some precise trail descriptions and great maps. Although we've only used it for some of their short walks so far, we're hoping to start on the AV1 this summer and again, while planning, find this book just invaluable! Great stuff!!!

For much of the last 139 years, Jacob Burckhardt's work has been dismissed as too "Nineteenth Century" for serious study: more literature than serious history. So much the pity. What Burckhardt left us in The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy is a magisterial, thematic, understanding of the Italian Renaissance that is far more 1990's in its observations and human understandings than its original 1860's. It is a shame that Burckhardt's famous pupil, Nietzsche, didn't learn a little more balance and discretion at his elder's feet. This book is a joy to read. Like Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, this work shows us how history can engage the spirit, and how far off the mark some modern historians have ... Read More:

As a chronicle of Fascist Italy, this book is very good. An impressive blend of political, economic, and military history which displays Fascist Italy effectively and thoroughly. The only problem is that the author tends to go into great detail about countless different characters (many of whom had no direct involvement in the drive of the regime) and thus it sometimes feels like one is reading a dictionary of Fascist supporters rather than a cohesive history of the period. Nonetheless, the book has been very well researched and is a gem for all who have an interest in the Duce and his era.
