has a non biased view and an excellent amount of information in here with many activities for a-level students however if there was to be a 2nd addition there would need to be some colour and some breaks in the paragraphs because much of chris's excellent views and information aren't poitned out so clearly

... but still a good read. The scenes set in Florence are interesting and the hero/heroine start out well, though she fails the hold our interest. For a similar situation examining the effects of unequal marriages on both men and women read Eliot's Middlemarch instead, which really is her masterpiece.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. This is a very short introduction to key themes, ideas and works of Renaissance Art. You might think that this doesn't need a comment, given the title of the book, but this OUP series, although always fascinating, is not always geared to the rank amateur and is very much subject to the interests and focus of the particular author. Consequently some books in the series are actually quite specialised and do require prior knowledge of the subject to get the benefit of them. This is not one of them. You do not need to know anything at all about Renaissance art before picking up this book. This is a marvellous book, The only guide you'll ever need. Everywhere in Milan worth going to, staying at or seeing is in here and anywhere that isn't, isn't. The photography is excellent, the writing is sublime. You don't have to bother going to Milan anymore, just get this book instead.

I don't usually like guidebooks. They can be dry, stuffy and written by people who seem to glide through a country without experiencing it. This is completely different. We had browsed in a shop but got a better price here, so bought online. Shona Main and Nick Bruno have an obvious passion for the area and are more like good friends passing on recommendations, rather than distant writers. That's not to say the writing isn't good. Quite the contrary, this is also the most entertaining guide book I've come across. It was good to use on the road, and even though we don't have kids, we decided that this book fulfilled everything we needed from the trip. However, this scholarly textbook will find direction beyond the academic community, it will also appeal to a wider audience. I agree with the prediction made by Carol Lansing, that this work will become a classic, especially as a grounding for specialization. The accumulation of detail is impressive but the narrative easily communicates understanding, through the complexity of events, and also, themes are skillfully interwoven with the chronology. Ditch all those boring guide books and take this little gem with you. It will take you to all those hidden restaurants that only the locals seem to know about and point out the details that make any historic city fascinating ( and that you might otherwise miss) There are some out of date entries however ( like the english langauge cinema in Trastevere) so do what I did - have a map marked up with interesting restaurants, gelaterias and cafes and then hop from one to the other as you pass the major sights!
