Just returned from Tuscany having completed four of the walks outlined in the book. Am an experienced hillwalker and found this book to be very helpful. The background introduction material is excellent as are the route descriptions, how to get to the start of walks and the hand drawn maps provide more than enough detail for any walker who wants to give the real hills a go in Tuscany. It will accompany me for many a year as I head back to Tuscany over the years.

I don't usually like guidebooks. They can be dry, stuffy and written by people who seem to glide through a country without experiencing it. This is completely different. We had browsed in a shop but got a better price here, so bought online. Shona Main and Nick Bruno have an obvious passion for the area and are more like good friends passing on recommendations, rather than distant writers. That's not to say the writing isn't good. Quite the contrary, this is also the most entertaining guide book I've come across. It was good to use on the road, and even though we don't have kids, we decided that this book fulfilled everything we needed from the trip. Being a reader of philosophy and history i have of course stumbed across Machiavelli; his Prince is a fascinating treatise on how to be the perfect dictator. The Discourses is far longer and more complex but all the better for it; its detail and shocking relevence to public affairs is astonishing for a man who spent most of his time either working as a diplomat in Italy or in forced exile from his native Florence. All in all some chapters such as those on Italian war efforts should really in all fairness be ignored but engaging and frequently humourous writing lifts this book above other political philosophies.

If you only take one guidebook to Venice, make sure it's this one. We took the 1st Edition along on our first trip to Venice last year and it changed a good holiday into an amazing experience. There is a mouth-watering introductory section with guidance on what specialities to look out, very useful for a first timer. The main section reviews recommended bars, cafes and restaurants, usefully divided into geographical areas so you can easily plan an itinerary to fit in with sight-seeing. The enthusiasm of the authors for good food and for the city of Venice shines through on every page. ... but still a good read. The scenes set in Florence are interesting and the hero/heroine start out well, though she fails the hold our interest. For a similar situation examining the effects of unequal marriages on both men and women read Eliot's Middlemarch instead, which really is her masterpiece.

This book is just simply that: readable and reliable. It's a good read with all sorts of quirky facts thrown in, but the restaurant guide is simply the business. We suspected as much from reviews and recommendations by "Fred" (as we've come to call him) of restaurants we knew from previous stays in Italy, but we used this guide for a recent short break in Umbria and it was right on the money for lunch and dinner, good food, and good restaurants. It's worth its weight in gold (and that's a lot of gold!).
